First of all he was known as a king of marches: His Florentiner March and Entry of the Gladiators had worldwide success, but also some of his overtures and waltzes became very popular. Originally titled La rosa di Toscana, this concert march was composed in 1907. This arrangement was commissioned by Wind Philharmonic Tyrol Austria and first performed at this orchestra's premier concert in 1997 in Innsbruck, Austria. It keeps the key of the orchestra version, while most band arrangements transpose a whole tone lower. The single reached number five on the UK Singles Chart and number 67 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1978. Queen frontman Freddie Mercury contributed harmony vocals to the song, as an uncredited background singer. A 1992 cover version by British dance outfit Undercover was also an international hit. As revealed in his album liner notes, Gold wrote Never Let Her Slip Away about meeting actress and Saturday Night Live cast member Laraine Newman, who was his girlfriend when he composed the song; Dave Grohl of the rock band Foo Fighters called the song the most beautiful piece of music ever written, and maybe one of the most melodically sophisticated songs I've ever heard in my entire life. This joyful little song swings along with lovely melodic twists and turns and gorgeous harmonies, allowing your band to bring back the nostalgic, carefree sound of the Seventies.
