Airborne, composed in 1999, was originally inspired by the illustration The Dinky-Bird by Maxfield Parrish, a print of which hung on the wall of my childhood home. The drawing was one of several included in Parrish’s illustrations from the 1904 Scribner and Sons Poems of Childhood, and was itself based on the Eugene Field poem The Dinkey-Bird. The piece is a deliberate attempt to write in a lighter, freer, more audience-accessible style, while capturing both the motion and the child-like wonder of the image. It is also an exploration of timbre, using a combination of instruments (flute, clarinet, marimba) I had not used together before. The piece is approximately 7 1/2 minutes long. Parts are included for the flute and clarinet. The marimba plays from score. The performers in the sound clip are Sue Kurian, flute; Robert D'Ambrosio, clarinet; and Cheryl Wiener, marimba. The Prelude Op. 28, No. 15, by Frédéric Chopin, also known as the Raindrop prelude, is one of his most famous works. It is in D♭ major and was published in 1839. The prelude is noted for repeating notes reminiscent of raindrops to many listeners. It usually lasts five to seven minutes, making it the longest of the preludes. The piece has a serene opening theme and a middle section that evokes a sense of procession and lugubrious prayers. The B section contrasts the mood of the A section, and the piece is often described as melancholic and poetic. Despite being a major key, it is not a happy piece but somewhat nostalgic, thoughtful, and wistful. The prelude presents technical and interpretive challenges and is considered profound and musically tricky.

Brahms composed this short piano piece in 1853, when he was around 20 years old, as a contribution to a guest album. It was recently rediscovered and published in an Urtext edition. The piece has a pastoral, four-bar central theme featuring parallel thirds in the hands, giving it an orchestral character. The B section becomes more transparent, with the parallel thirds disappearing. Brahms later reused the theme of the Albumblatt in the Trio section of the Scherzo movement of his Horn Trio Op. 40, composed around 12 years later. This reworking shows the composer expanding on his original idea and making it richer and more satisfying in his mature work. The Albumblatt is considered an early, relatively simple composition compared to Brahms' three piano sonatas written that same year. However, it is still a valuable example of the young composer's genius. The main editorial issue is the unexpected piano marking in measure 47, which seems out of place for achieving a melodic climax and may have been a mistake by Brahms.

Justin Chiang has miraculously arranged an additional 20 of these Chorales for traditional brass trio (Trumpet in B-flat, Horn, and Trombone) in Volume II. They sound great and can be used for a variety of purposes including warming up the group at the beginning of a rehearsal, a recital, funeral, religious service, etc. Each chorale is identified with a BWV number, title in German and English translation. You cannot be without these gorgeous pieces.

The Dutch Composer, Johan B Kok (1889-1954), wrote over two- hundred compositions for different combinations of instruments, all of which included the Mandolin or the Mandolin Orchestra. ‘Joska’, originally written for two Mandolins, Mandola and Guitar, bears the subtitle and style of the ‘Zigeuner Romance’ or ‘Gypsy Romance’, and it may well have been inspired by Monti’s better known ‘Czardas’, which, significantly, was also originally written for Mandolin and Piano. Both pieces have contrasting slow and fast sections, which is typical of Central European ‘tavern music’, commonly associated with Hungary. ‘Czardas’, of course, means ‘tavern’ in Hungarian.
