The only way to come out victorious is to turn limitations into possibilities, to leave to the listener's imagination what the sound cannot return, to play on the strengths-and there are many-of the instrument to which the score is destined.The flute, so archaic and close to human vocality, lends itself perfectly to music that alludes to theatrical aspects. So I decided to take up the request of the talented Italian flutist Michela Podera, and compose a short piece for her, all centered on recitative-flavored etchings, sometimes whispered and sometimes declaimed in a stentorian manner. The immediate source of inspiration was a painting by the Neapolitan painter Vincenzo Laricchia, to whom I owe the poetic mood and title of this work of mine: Masquerade.Composer pour flûte solo est un défi. This arrangement of What Child Is This (2005) was commissioned by a former college classmate.  The vocal part is unchanged from the traditional carol, but the instrumental setting makes this arrangement unique.  The instrumentation includes piano, flute, violin, and cello.  All parts are of moderate difficulty, making them accessible to many players.  Originally arranged for baritone voice, it could also be sung by a female soloist or by a group of singers in unison.  For an all instrumental ensemble, the melody could be played on an instrument instead of sung.  Suitable for worship services, concerts and recitals during the Christmas season.

Bradbury, 1816-1868) contains three general moods to evoke themes of the hymn “My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less.”  The melody is first heard in F major in a quiet, reflective setting suggesting trust.  In the second section, still in F major, the melody is set with slightly darker harmonies to hint at life’s trials and turmoil.  After an ascending transition to B-flat major, the melody is accompanied by a triumphant, majestic fanfare.  Suitable for worship as prelude, Communion music, or offertory.
