THE PARTING BEFORE THE BATTLE was written by Thomas Moore (1779-1852) an Irish writer, poet and lyricist celebrated for his Irish Melodies. He is best remembered for the lyrics of The Minstrel Boy and The Last Rose of Summer and one of the first recognized champions of freedom in Ireland. As an impressionable young man with a quick Irish temper, the execution of a close college friend during the United Irishmen's Rebellion aroused in Moore a patriotic fervor that provided his greatest literary inspiration. Thomas Moore's best known work included a brilliant biographical masterpiece taken from the confidential memoirs of Lord Byron. His own Memoirs, Journal, and Correspondence are an invaluable social record of life in England and Ireland during the first half of the nineteenth century. James W. Knox, composer, depicts a battle of the brave Irish men and women who have courageously fought against those who seek destruction. The chorus should sing with great boldness and display a sense of honorable pride. To create a dramatic affect, James also used Erse or Gaelic with an ancient proverb, Ní neart go cur le chéile. (There is no strength without unity.) This text is used throughout the piece in addition to the poem. The proverb is set to the melody of Dies irae , which is a famous Gregorian chant dating back to the 13th century and is found as part of the Latin sequence in the Requiem. .

There is a long tradition of arranging piano music for guitar. This edition reverses that tradition. This set of music for piano is based my Twenty Etudes For Guitar. The guitar and the piano are certainly cousins so I believe the essence of works for one instrument can be expressed on the other, in either direction. While these pieces may in fact work as etudes for piano I have purposefully renamed them. Whether or not they work as etudes I will leave up to each individual pianist and piano teacher the extent of their didactic usefulness. Ultimately though all music can be used for study and my wish is these pieces can be used for study and performance. They are relatively brief and ideally played in sets, the number and selections being determined by the performer. Guitarist Neal Fitzpatrick has a B.M. from the Hartt School where he studied with Alan Spriestersbach and his M.M. from The Yale School of Music where he studied with Benjamin Verdery. One cannot escape the sense of a ravenous hunger found in the incessant motion of the piece as the flames leap from tree to tree, engulfing all in their path. The air is choked with ash and a heat that cannot be withstood. The flames reach ever higher driven by winds created as a result of the intense heat. Nothing can stop the destruction until all sources of fuel have been devoured. This piece evokes a definite feeling of the late Classical/early Romantic period and the technical demands on the pianist are not insignificant. While there is a melody to be brought out in the right hand amidst the constant swirl of 16th notes, the left hand leaps about to fill in the harmonic underpinnings.
