The movement is approximately 3 minutes and is filled with excitement throughout. This arrangement is designed for mature players, as every part is demanding. That being said, this arrangement is very easily rehearsed and performed. Tutti sections of long eighth note passages from the original have been adapted for winds, so while challenging the parts are all playable and accessible. Other changes have been made throughout to allow for breathing. Early college students could perform this piece easily or even advanced high school students with proper guidance. This work is a real showcase for both the clarinets and bassoon!  Audiences really enjoy this one as every member is equally showcased.

This is a very popular format to give an indication when to change chords. However, the drawback is that there is no way of knowing how long each chord lasts as the bar structure is missing. Death is the adversary, not the ruler. The Hand that Signed the Paper speaks of the often cruel and deadly power of a signed document- a document of taxation, of treaty or of counting casualties. The five fingers mark the dead, but do not soothe. “Hands have no tears to flow.� And Death Shall Have No Dominion expresses the triumph of the human spirit over death. “Though lovers be lost love shall not.� Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night represents the fight against death. “Rage, rage against the dying of the light.� The musical expression of these poems places the voice in the low (dark) range. Tempi are slow, and minor keys are prevalent. Only occasionally are major tonalities presented. These passages combine with particularly uplifting phrases such as “Though they sink through the sea, they shall rise again� and “Wild men, who caught and sang the sun in flight…� Near the end of the last song, the poet addresses his deceased father: “And you, my father, there on the sad height...� The voice stays on a constant pitch while the harmony lifts beneath (to the heights), in the Lydian (raised) mode. Hendrik Waelput (1845-1885) was a Belgian composer who was known as the Flemish Schubert.  This work, originally for four violas has been adapted for either 4 Bb clarinets or 3 Bb's and bass clarinet.  Performance time is roughly 2:40.  This work is suited for recitals, church services, and weddings.  It can be sightread by a group of experienced musicians, and is also appropriate for younger clarinetists.  The top 3 parts each have melodic material at various points so everyone can have fun!
