Each instrumentalist plays one and only one note throughout the entire piece. There are no expression markings – only dynamics. There are no special techniques. Each performer is “self-isolating�. 2. 48 instrumentalists – 24 violins, 10 violas, 8 cellos, 6 double basses. The entire ensemble covers four chromatic octaves. 3. Vibrato consistent across all instrumentalists. 4. No liberty with rhythm. Follow exactly as written. 5. This may be considered an etude – a study of volume. All instrumentalists should be consistent in their interpretation of each dynamic. pppp should be extremely quiet but still audible. 6. The change in volume for crescendos and decrescendos should be gradual – reaching end dynamic in a legato, smooth manner. 7. The visual of the dynamics in the full score – often depicts the program – like hieroglyphics. Or, in some cases, like the image of an organism viewed through a microscope. 8. Optional – performers may wear masks during performance. And, if space permits, have 6 feet social distancing between performers.

The Intermezzo was a character piece from the Romantic Period which often took a specific musical idea, and created a bittersweet, elegiac mood, similar to the feeling evoked by a Nocturne. This piece takes the interval of a 6th and weaves it through several configurations to create this same feeling in the first offering from the GateWay Editions First Position String Orchestra Series. A Brahmsian feeling predominates throughout. At 5 mins 30 secs duration, this all-first-position piece makes an excellent concert feature for the ensemble that is finding its voice, but may not yet be up to the level of multi-position full-fledged classical string music. The tempo is stately without being draggy, the mood is somber but not dark, and tuneful without being busy or meandering. The key signature of one sharp makes this nicely adapted to teaching and performance by students, while the rich writing makes it quite presentable to an adult concert audience.The bowings are by string pedagogue Lori Sandell Lacey. The PDF provided here is a score, and a single part for each section. Multiple printings of each part, as needed for your ensemble, are permissible, of course. There are NO notes out of first position, or outside the range of the second year of string pedagogy, the basses having a bit more need to move up 1/2 position for each string. n There are no trills or fast passages across strings. The Art of the Fugue is considered to be one of the greatest musical creations everundertaken. A series of fourteen fugues (last of which is not complete) and four canonswhich are all based on the same d minor theme would perhaps seem, at first glance, to be apendantic academic exercise. However, in the hands of a composer such as Bach, themonothematic material is magnified through repetion which creates a sound universe whichis all it’s own.The work is also shrouded in mystery, as there are no tempo indications in the manuscript,no indications of the instrumentation which Bach intended and no clear indication as to theorder of the movements. An ordering was given to the work after the composer’s death bythe composer’s son, C. P. E. BACH which attempted to underline the pedogogical aspects ofthe composition (as a sort of a textbook for studying fugues and counterpoint). The orderused in this arrangement respects this ordering as it was given by Bach’s heirs. It wouldseem probable however, that this order was not that intended by Bach.The editor hopes that this new version of the Art of the Fugue will be useful in allowingSaxophonists everywhere to perform this great work.
