A few years ago, I attended a concert by the National University of Singapore Symphony Orchestra, a group of passionate students, at the National University of Singapore. They performed Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, which has continuously captivated me through the wild, grotesque sounds. Recently, my friend, Joshua suggested that I could write an orchestral transcription for Dream of a Witches’ Sabbath. I have decided to keep the instrumentation to a minimum, where smaller size bands can give it a try without the fear of not owning unusual auxiliary instruments, but still able to maintain the original orchestral sounds.  The original program notes by Berlioz is as follows: He sees himself at a witches' sabbath, in the midst of a hideous gathering of shades, sorcerers and monsters of every kind who have come together for his funeral. Strange sounds, groans, outbursts of laughter; distant shouts which seem to be answered by more shouts. The beloved melody appears once more, but has now lost its noble and shy character; it is now no more than a vulgar dance tune, trivial and grotesque: it is she who is coming to the sabbath ... Roar of delight at her arrival ... She joins the diabolical orgy ... The funeral knell tolls, burlesque parody of the Dies irae, the dance of the witches. The dance of the witches combined with the Dies irae.

I have here arranged it for Instrumental Octet. Since it no longer has lyrics to convey the meaning I have added extra markings and altered some harmonies and rhythms to add the appropriate interest and emotion. Several parts now contain short unmetered solos to be done freely in recitative fashion. The individual parts are not difficult with just basic notes and rhythms; the beauty is in the way they fit together creating harmony and polyphony. With a 6 minute performance time, this is a major work which bridges the Classical and Romantic eras.

This short version of the famous Hallelujah Chorus is adpted for children's orchestra, but is suitable for beginner strings of any age. The 3rd violin and bass parts are suitable for children who have been learning a just couple of terms and the piano part is also easy enough for a child to play after a couple of year's lessons. The optional timps part is intended for a visiting adult, but similarly an older child would have no difficulty. The viola part is slightly harder because players are often later starters (and vioists are the most intelligent players!), but the 3rd violin part can be put into alto on request. All of the work is in 1st postion but there is plenty to challenge the players with counting and dynamics.

Joy to the World is a song written by Hoyt Axton and made famous by the band Three Dog Night. The song is also popularly known by its opening lyric, Jeremiah was a bullfrog. Some of the words are nonsensical. Axton wanted to persuade his record producers to record a new melody he had written, and the producers asked him to sing any words to the tune. A member of Three Dog Night said that the original lyrics to the song were Jeremiah was a prophet but no one liked it. When Hoyt Axton performed the song to the group, two of the three main vocalists – Danny Hutton and Cory Wells – rejected the song, but Chuck Negron felt that the band needed a silly song to help bring the band back together as a working unit. Negron also felt that the song wasn't even close to our best record, but it might have been one of our most honest..

A very popular number for weddings, also effective for meditations and recital encores. Carl Bohm Carl Bohm, sometimes spelled with a K as in Karl Bohm, was born in 1844 and died in 1920. Bohm was a German composer, pianist, and songwriter. He was famous for writing songs with a light and optimistic atmosphere. Some of his most famous songs are Calm as the Night, Twilight, May Bells, Enfant Cheri, and The Fountain. In addition to his songs, he was a very popular composer of string quartets and string trios. His music was very popular and profitable. His publisher used some of the profits from sales of Bohm’s work to prepare the works of Johannes Brahms for publication. Output He certainly was prolific, not only with individual compositions but collections and albums of original music, such as the Bohm Album for the Pianoforte. The quality of his melodies is remarkable. They have a familiar quality similar to folk-songs. It’s no wonder they have become so popular.   His greatest masterpiece may well be the famous Calm as the Night as it is so well finished and refined. This song comes to us from a collection known simply as Lieder Op. 326. Calm as the Night (Still wie die Nacht) is listed as Number 27 in the collection. The song is scored for vocal duet and piano. The lyrics for Bohm’s Still wie die Nacht are anonymous. Lyrics: Still wie die Nacht Und tief wie das Meer, Soll deine Liebe sein! Wenn du mich liebst, So wie ich dich, Will ich dein eigen sein. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844467). Many years ago I was on a judging panel to select winning song entries to mark the United Nations World Peace Celebration. I remember being quite disappointed in the majority of entries because the lyrics proceeded to list all the current world conflicts and their proposed solutions. It made for overly long, and ultimately boring, songs. I was haunted by those entries when I went home that night. I lied in bed and thought all I wanted to hear was.... Finally, at a sleepless 2 a.m., I got up and went to the piano and wrote this piece as a response to that. (That line from my tortured dream; all I ever wanted even made it into the song.).   I set it for TTBB voices to provide a closer, tighter harmony to indicate the brotherhood I was dreaming of. Its simplicity and extreme brevity are no doubt knee jerk reactions to the long, boring pieces I heard all day. This piece has been in my drawer for two decades because I thought it was too brief to be of any practical value for anyone, but all attempts I made to lengthen it seemed to spoil it. But it remains one of my favorite and most passionate pieces that I have written, so I have decided to post it 'as is' and let you creative types decide how to use it. Enjoy!.
