He wrote the mass for the Cathedral at Reims, where he served as a canon, a permanent clergy member. According to a rubric found at the Cathedral, it would have likely been performed for the Saturday Lady Mass. Guillaume de Machaut's Messe de Nostre Dame is significant in the history of music for several reasons: It is the first complete setting of the Ordinary of the Mass by a single composer that has survived. It is a unified mass, meaning that the composer selected relevant chants for each section as the borrowed tenor. It was composed in four voices, which was unusual at the time. The texts of both Gloria and Credo are quite lengthy, and therefore Machaut set these movements in a style reminiscent of the earlier discant style, having short phrases, similar rhythmic motion in all parts, and a low ratio of notes per syllable of text, both ending with long, rhapsodic sections for the final word, Amen. I remember being quite disappointed in the majority of entries because the lyrics proceeded to list all the current world conflicts and their proposed solutions. It made for overly long, and ultimately boring, songs. I was haunted by those entries when I went home that night. I lied in bed and thought all I wanted to hear was.... Finally, at a sleepless 2 a.m., I got up and went to the piano and wrote this piece as a response to that. (That line from my tortured dream; all I ever wanted even made it into the song.).   I set it for TTBB voices to provide a closer, tighter harmony to indicate the brotherhood I was dreaming of. Its simplicity and extreme brevity are no doubt knee jerk reactions to the long, boring pieces I heard all day. This piece has been in my drawer for two decades because I thought it was too brief to be of any practical value for anyone, but all attempts I made to lengthen it seemed to spoil it. But it remains one of my favorite and most passionate pieces that I have written, so I have decided to post it 'as is' and let you creative types decide how to use it. Enjoy!. While reading on the nature of worship, a particular blog article ended with Adoniram Judson’s early 19th Century baptismal poem, Come Holy Spirit, Dove Divine. The flowing text called out (at least to me!) for a musical setting. Accordingly, some melodic and harmonic ideas began to percolate in my thoughts. However, before getting very far along in writing a tune, there were two surprises in store. First many others had already set the text to music before (with a multitude of tunes) going back to at least 1833. Second, despite being a Baptist for over forty years, I discovered that this hymn has been in the Baptist Hymnal since 1956 yet I have no recollection of every singing it! Well, chagrined at my ignorance, I carried on writing a new melody and harmony for this deserving text. I sought to make it friendly to congregational singers while still containing rich and sing-able harmonies and so aimed for a four-part hymn-style form. However, as I suspect my ignorance of the hymn is a common condition, a fresh and modern tune which would be at home in varied musical styles and have popular appeal was also pursued. The result is a delightful and uplifting tune, easy to sing, with an optimistic and forward momentum, commensurate with the meaning of believers’ baptism, Buried with Him in baptism; raised to walk in new life. The music is flexible in application to many church music styles: praise team and band, choir and organ, congregation and piano, or mix and match to fit your needs. May you find Come, Holy Spirit, Dove Divine, singing a much needed text, a means for your congregation to joyfully join with new believers in celebration of their baptism!

This edition is simplified for early intermediate level pianists with perhaps an average of two to four years of experience. Melodic and harmonic material is simplified substantially in this version as well as in our easy piano edition.  As in our easy edition, the right hand rhythms in this edition include a lot of the syncopation of the original song, but anyone who has loves Just Sing and has sung along with it will have no problem with that part. The left hand rhythms have been simplified a bit, but they feel complex agains the right hand rhythms.  This arrangement is a half step higher than what is sung in Trolls World Tour.The main difference between this version and our easy piano version is the rhythmic difficulty in the left hand.

This lovely folksong is thought to have come from Scotland, though similar versions have been recorded in other parts of Britain. The song is also known as “O Waly, Waly� which means something like “woe is me�. For such an old song, it is not surprising that there are many variations of the lyrics. An early version of the modern lyrics was consolidated by the British folksong collector Cecil Sharp in 1906 using multiple older sources in southern England. There are many sets of lyrics with different story-lines. This was because performers would often create new lyrics for the song. This melody has attracted a family of lyrics many of which bear little relationship to each other. The words used in this choral arrangement reflect the popular and optimistic lyrics used during the twentieth century. The song was made popular by many folk singers notably Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. It has become one of the most popular folk songs today, largely because of its beautiful tune. But as with the lyrics, there are many variations on the melody with the result that no single variation can be considered the “correct� one.This SSA arrangement by Colin Kirkpatrick is ideal for boy choir, amateur choir, school or college choir. Each section of the choir as the melody line at some point and there are attractive and evocative counter-melodies. In the Soprano 1 part (which has one brief divisi section), the highest note is G5 (the G just above the staff) and the highest note in the Soprano 2 part is E5 (near the top of the treble staff). The Alto part has a range of G below Middle C (G4) up to B flat in the middle of the treble staff. The piano part is an integral part of the arrangement and therefore essential. The music begins in E flat and modulates to C major. Running at just over three minutes, the work is sure to be popular with choir and audiences alike.
