Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13 - 3rd Movement - Beethoven, commonly known as Sonata Pathétique, was written in 1798 when the composer was 27 years old, and was published in 1799. It has remained one of his most celebrated compositions. Although commonly thought to be one of the few works to be named by the composer himself, it was actually named Grande sonate pathétique (to Beethoven's liking) by the publisher, who was impressed by the sonata's tragic sonorities. Prominent musicologists debate whether or not the Pathétique may have been inspired by Mozart's piano sonata K. 457, since both compositions are in C minor and have three very similar movements. The second movement, Adagio cantabile, especially, makes use of a theme remarkably similar to that of the spacious second movement of Mozart's sonata. However, Beethoven's sonata uses a unique motif line throughout, a major difference from Haydn or Mozart’s creation. This is the original Beethoven arrangement of this sonata. Most of the songs are brief, lasting around two minutes.  Another attractive feature is the inclusion of a literal English translation directly above the Italian.  I believe these songs will be successful for auditions and in recital settings, both informal and formal.  My hope is that over time, these 24 Italian Songs and Arias for 21st Century Singers will take their place beside the originals for the establishment of a solid vocal technique.

This is the first of a set of ‘ SIX GENTILLESSES EN TROIS PARTIES’ for musette (a type of bagpipe), viele (an early violin) and a bass instrument (probably a cello) published by Boivin in Paris in 1731 and described as also playable on recorder, transverse flute, oboe or violin. Of course all the parts could be doubled (good for sales) and the instructions ‘tous’ for all players and ‘seul’ when only one should play would come in useful. Boismortier became very wealthy from sales of his music. The three movements, Gayment, Gracieusement & Gayment are for three independent players of intermediate standard and above. This arrangement for flute, oboe and bassoon or cello has been lightly edited. All edits are shown in parentheses ( ) or dashed lines. The original two top parts have been set in the modern treble clef. The Boivin edition used the old violin clef. The edition also had no dynamic markings as the musette was not capable of dynamic variation. Generally the sections marked ‘tous’ should be louder than those marked ‘seul’ but, since dynamics are so much a matter of personal taste, I have left these to the performers’ discretion.

It has an optional organ part if so desired, but will work perfectly well without. Originally written for three violins three violas, three celli, double bass and continuo, this transcription despite its difficulty may actually be accessible to more advanced non-professional quartets. It for the most part lays well on all of the instrument and once continuous lines have been dispersed to allow for some breaks. A lead part solo has been created over the second movement Phrygian cadence that would have been originally improvised by the harpsichordist. Either the organist or another Instrument could improvise their own solo here if desired. Playing Time 13:00.
