French composer Jacques Leguerney (1906-1997) has been recognized for his outstanding oeuvre of songs for voice and piano, mostly composed upon poems of the French poets of the Pleiade. After his death, the Leguerney Estate decided to allow the publication of his instrumental chamber music. These works, many of which were written in his early years, are valuable contributions to the French chamber music repertoire, representing the 20 century from its early yearsthrough World War II. This sonata was composed during October and November of 1925. This edition is based upon one autograph manuscript of the full score, as well as a manuscript copy of the revised first movement which contains nuances marked probably by Leguerney. There is no indication that it was premiered, although the ms copy of the first movement would seem to indicate that that movement at the least received a reading. We have added rehearsal numbers, and corrected a few notational mistakes in the manuscript.

This is a love poem describing the virtues of a young lady. The language is flowery and obtuse, but none-the-less beautiful. The first line translates as Gentle midst the hidden thorns. It is obvious that Monteverdi is enlarging his scope with this trio for all male voices (2 tenors and a bass) as the soloists, with a more complex accompaniment that many of the previous songs. This easy arrangement for tuba and piano has been adapted to be simple to perform and understand the structure of the original work for various levels of musical knowledge. It can be played freely by beginning students because of the ease imposed on the piece. It is often performed at wedding ceremonies slowly and reverently, challenging the effect suggested by Bach in his original score for voices with trumpet, oboes, strings, and continuous bass. This is one of Bach's most beautiful cantatas, made famous by the Jesus the Joy of Men chorus. It was originally composed for Advent 1716 in Weimar. Years later, already in Leipzig, Advent was tempus clausum, there was no music in the churches. Bach then reworked it for the Feast of Mary's Visitation. It is the final chorale of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. Although it is the 32nd cantata composed by Bach, of those that have survived, it was given BWV 147 in the complete catalog of his works.
