The Italian libretto was written by Francesco Maria Piave based on the 1832 play Le roi s'amuse by Victor Hugo. Despite serious initial problems with the Austrian censors who had control over northern Italian theatres at the time, the opera had a triumphant premiere at La Fenice in Venice on 11 March 1851.The work, Verdi's sixteenth in the genre, is widely considered to be the first of the operatic masterpieces of Verdi's middle-to-late career. Its tragic story revolves around the licentious Duke of Mantua, his hunch-backed court jester Rigoletto, and Rigoletto's daughter Gilda. The opera's original title, La maledizione (The Curse), refers to a curse placed on both the Duke and Rigoletto by a courtier whose daughter the Duke has seduced with Rigoletto's encouragement. A number of American movies in the 20th century, including Stagecoach, Tobacco Road, and Wagon Master, have also featured this hymn.This arrangement for Intermediate Piano solo in the key of G major includes an interlude from As a Tree Beside the Water by Alfred H. Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719611). The Prodigal Son as arranged here is an adaptation of the final scene of Debussy's cantata which won the Prix de Rome in 1884. Debussy scored his work for three primary solo voices, the mother (soprano), the father (bass), and the son (tenor) plus a couple of minor servant roles. In this arrangement for SATB voices which begins as the prodigal son returns to his home, the father's solo and son's reply are kept, but they may be eliminated and the piece begin at ms. 68 where the entire company praises God at the son's return. Debussy modulated at this point to the key of B major which gives the solo soprano a high B near the end. For choral ease, such as it is, the arranger drops the modulation to A major making the high note a little more accessible for choral sopranos. Being a piano reduction of a Debussy orchestral accompaniment, a competent pianist is necessary, but the choral writing is not overly difficult. The English text is a translation by the arranger.

An Irish flute solo I wrote for my Grandfather's funeral.  It starts off pensive and sentimental, to reflect the sorrow of losing a loved one, but then takes on an exuberant feel to celebrate a life well lived.  There are two pages - page 2 is in D Minor for classical C flute and other C instruments (to match the recording), while the first page is in E Minor for Irish flute or tinwhistle in D.  The overall range is just over 2 octaves:  C4 (middle C) to D6 for C flute or D4 to E6 for D flutes.  It also plays well on violin.

Almost everybody and his mother on the Planet have written their own arrangements of Amazing Grace so I guess I should not be the exception. Amazing Grace (And Then some) is written for Solo Tuba, accompanied by a wind band. I was inspired to write this chart by a young man named Brandon Jones who lives in the Mobile, Alabama area. He was about 20 years old at the time of this writing (in 2012). He wanted to dedicate it to his father who had died when Brandon was about 4 or 5 years old. My arrangement of Amazing Grace (And Then Some) is not just another theme and variations type of work. Instead, I have interwoven two additional hymns (Praise to the Lord, the Almighty and I Will Sing of My Redeemer) in order to break up the monotony of just the one hymn (hence the subtitle And Then Some) Oh, did I mention that Brandon plays a C tuba that was passed down from his father?

Difficulty: Not difficult. Not hard to learn. Fun to sing. The piano part will take some practice and will require a comfortable octave reach. History: The Father Sent the Son is the title song of a cantata I composed ten or so years ago for a church choir that could barely muster a men's section. They loved to sing. They rehearsed every Sunday afternoon between services and sang every Sunday morning for worship and often in the evenings. They loved the entire cantata and sang it with enthusiasm. Since that time other choirs have song the cantata, and I have added and subtracted and rewritten through the years. I wanted to get the entire cantata as close to perfection as possible before I published it, but I have decided to publish the portions I am most happy with piecemeal for the time being. When all portions are where I thing they should be, I will publish the entire cantata as one work. Lord willing, of course.  Please let me know if you enjoy the music I write.
