This one is super special, because it describes what life is like in the city. The A section is your common stroll, let's say through Central Park or down the block. The beat never stops with anyone. Everyone just keeps walking, and this constant bass line represents that. The B section represents the unexpected. You decide to walk through the subway, encountering a man playing tunes on a funky guitar. The weird chords and rhythms emphasize the curiosity of the music you're hearing. And finally, the C section represents the city lights. Beautiful, aren't they? Yet, unusual at the same time, represented by the 7/4 time signature. (Which was my first time using that time signature, how do you think I did?) I had fun writing this. Inspired by my granddaughters' love of the knock-knock jokes based on the phrases; 'Knock-knock, who's there? Orange-orange who? orange you glad you're...' This is a rollicking piece with a swinging intro (repeated as bridge going into second A section) but segueing into a B section at a slower tempo and comprised completely of major sevenths! (all in broken chords and/or rolled chords with help for small hands by the use of damper pedal). Structure of a major 7th chord being: maj 3rd, m3rd, maj 3rd requires many accidentals in the B section. The mood surprises with a dramatic shift into this dreamy sequence created by these major sevenths which LH breaks up and RH answers with rolled same chord. Intro is sassy and attention-grabbing. With hands in unison, this familiar rhythmic pattern beginning with a very quick note (16th) with emphasis on the second note, introduces the first A section consisting of melody of broken chords with fun, fun lyrics that are tossed around between the hands in an antiphonal question/answer style. Interspersed are 5-finger position descending motifs as well as accompanying chords (or pieces of chords) placed on predictable beats for continuity and ease of learning. Chord progressions are unexpected and surprising, as are the 5-finger position motifs. Coda creates excitement by building D major full chord with hands in unison with much crescendo. Great for analyzing chords and 5-finger position melodies. Did you know the word 'orange' has no English rhyming word? I took that as a challenge and had FUN with the lyrics! When singing the lyrics, I envision the first phrase being sung in a normal voice, the 2nd in an operatic voice, 3rd in a voice much like the 'Cookie Monster', and the 4th in a very childish voice. Too many versions of public domain songs will just phone in the chords in my opinion with a I IV and V7. This version is a bit jazzed up, which may not be what you looking for. If you are looking for real basic accompianiment this isn't the version for you, though I do try to use as many open strings on the guitar as possible, and the chords are often small.7. The other problem I often see with public domain songs is that the famous cowboy guitar chords most versions use lead to a lot of clunky part writing in my opinion (no thought of tendency tones, no thought of smooth voice leading, parralel 8ves and 5ths, doubled 3rds, etc). Those voicings are easier to sight-read, but are also not super creative, and as a teacher, I don't exactly want a student to see the same G Major voicing forever. That gives this false impression that that G major vocing is somehow superior. 8. Another small issue I see with public domain songs is that the vocal melody is sometimes not in the famous cowboy guitar chord. There is nothing wrong with that, and sometimes you want that, but since I like to train my singing with the help of my guitar, I like when arrangements make the vocal melody easy to add or remove on guitar. I can easily play a sophisticated solo version of this in a coffee shop, or I can just look at the chord nomenclature and see the song only from a rhythm section point of view when in a full band, when usually you purposely want to contribute less.9. Notes with an upward stem represent those notes being the original melody. This give arrangement a lot of replay value because a skillfull performer can improvise the background harmonies.

In order to avoid tuning the violin down a half step (i.e., scordatura) for the double stop passages, the second violin/viola accompanies the first violin to create the sound of double stops while allowing the instruments to tune as usual. After the introduction, the viola and cello take the lead with the upbeat rhythm that is the hallmark of the song. The D7 is a slight key change because it has an F# in the chord. It's a secodary dominace chord, V7/V, and often a vii7b5 can replace it. In other words, the F# goes gravitates into the next chord, a G Major chord.4. G6 is really just the 3 thinnest strings of the guitar open. It's a great transition chord.5. The D# is part of the C major blues scale.6. Adding more 7th chords than originally there is almost always an interesting pursuit. Going from G to G7 can certainly aid in helping things sound more goofy.
