I took themes and fragments of themes from the original and re-ordered them into a bit of a rondo form. There are interpretive marks in every measure making it a great piece for auditions to show your technique and interpretation. Not too difficult to play but sounds quite advanced when all details are observed. Another feature is the beautiful harmonic interplay between the solo and accompaniment. Imagine A and B (In G minor) as solo: a mermaid singing. When you hear the re-exposition of the theme (A’) you will notice two voices – the bass starts to sing too. You will feel a sensation of more movement as if two persons are talking and dancing. The C part is basically in D minor and shows that pure love I cannot describe in words, but I can feel myself when playing those notes and harmonic progressions. The piece ends in D major chord.

Published by Erik Cole (A0.996120). The Chinese Dance is one of my favorite movements of the suite, so I couldn't leave it out, despite a few of the parts being very difficult to transcribe. The flute parts with the melody really couldn't be simplified and still sound the same. But even more difficult was the second clarinet part - all those 16th notes have to be there, but they're so low they have to be in a bassoon part, and it's much, much more difficult to play on bassoon than on either clarinet or oboe. I compromised by offering the alternative version where the arpeggios are split up, but even that is still fairly difficult.

The Christmas Waltz is a Christmas song written by Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne for Frank Sinatra, who recorded it in 1954 as the B-side of a new recording of White Christmas. Cahn recalls, One day during a very hot spell in Los Angeles the phone rang and it was Jule Styne to say, 'Frank wants a Christmas song.' Cahn resisted. Jule, we're not going to write any Christmas song. After Irving Berlin's 'White Christmas'? The idea's just ridiculous. Styne was emphatic, however. 'Frank wants a Christmas song.' The two met in Styne's apartment to begin work on the project, and Cahn asked the composer, 'Hey, Jule, has there ever been a Christmas waltz?' He said no. I said, 'Play that waltz of yours.'
