Saxophone Quartet (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone)

This is a delightful and fresh arrangement of this ancient Christmas classic, in Dulci Jubilo. It is fresh because the arranger has chosen not to use the 19th century harmonisation that we are all so familiar with (by Robert Lucas de Pearsall). Instead they have based this new arrangement on the harmonies of the great Renaissance composer, Michael Praetorius, from the first decade of the 17th century. An optional fanfare and postlude, based on other works of Praetorius, are included to set the context of the Renaissance period. The first verse is pure Praetorius, but then the arranger takes us in different and interesting directions while remaining completely faithful to the beautiful melody. There are three differently arranged verses.

‘Lachrimæ or Seven Tears figured in Seven passionate pavans, with divers other pavans, galliards and allemands, set forth for the lute, viols, or violons, in five parts’ is a collection of instrumental music composed by John Dowland and published in 1604. Apart from the sheer quality of the music, it is notable as the first publication of English music scored specifically for strings and for lute, and the first to have used the table layout for consort music.

There are seven Lachrimae pavans, which are variations on the theme that Dowland had already made famous as a lute solo and a song (“Flow my tears”).

The “divers other” compositions are: two almans (“almands”), nine lively galliards (“galiards”), two sombre pavans, and a “funerall.” 
There are 21 pieces in all and I have divided them into three books, retaining the original ordering of the pieces.

This serves to give the canon voices prominence.  The remaining part is set for manuals (organ/piano), omitting the pedal part.  The individual parts are printed separately, with various suggestions for instrument choices. Beethoven's WoO 33 originally consisted of 5 pieces, with the first three likely intended for a musical clock, while the remaining two date from around 1795 with different instrumentation. These pieces were possibly completed by 1800 for an exhibition of waxworks and musical automata displayed by Count Josef Deym. The work showcases Beethoven's versatility and creativity in composing music for unconventional instruments, reflecting his innovative approach to composition.

The Girl From Ipanema (Girl from Ipanema) is a Brazilian song from Bossa Nova. It was composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim and written by Vinicius de Moraes in 1962. A 1964 version, recorded by Astrud Gilberto and Stan Getz in the United States, became an international success. This is present on the Getz/Gilberto album, which also included songs by João Gilberto. In the United States, the single reached number five on the Billboard Hot 100, remaining for two weeks, and in the United Kingdom it reached number 29. Ipanema is a beachfront neighborhood located in the southern region of the city of Rio de Janeiro/Brazil. The song was inspired by Heloísa Eneida Menezes Paes Pinto (now known as Helo Pinheiro), a seventeen-year-old girl who lived on Montenegro Street in Ipanema. Every day, she passed the bar-café Veloso on her way to the beach.

This hymn was probably written in 1771, as it is in Conyers's Collection of Psalms and Hymns, 1772, in 7 stanzas of 4 lines. It was republished in the Olney Hymns, 1779, Bk. i., No. 79, with the heading Praise for the Fountain opened. It is based on Zech. xiii. 1, In that day there shall be a Fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness. This hymn in full or abbreviated is in extensive use in all English-speaking countries.
A well known form of this hymn is From Calvary's Cross a Fountain flows. This appeared in Cotterill's Selection, 8th ed., 1819, No. 43, in 5 stanzas of 4 lines, and consists of stanzas i.-v. very much altered. In Bickersteth's Christian Psalmody, 1833, No. 49, that same opening stanza is given, with a return, in most of the remaining six stanzas, to the original text. The question as to by whom these alterations were made, first in Cotterill's Selection off 1819, and then in Bickersteth's Christian Psalmody, 1833, is answered by R. W. Dibdin, in the Christian Annotator, vol. iii., No. 76, for July 5, 1856, p. 278
