Here's a lively dance for recorder trio (SSA) in a 'Neo-Renaissance' idiom, with a mixture of spiky harmonies and a nod or two towards Susato, Praetorius and Dufay.  The music is fairly challenging towards the end, though players of an intermediate standard will have no trouble pulling it off.

Plato's Fire is an allegory to the haunting shadow images projected on blank rock walls that were meant to frighten chained inmates, though in reality these images were created (behind the inmates without their knowledge) by harmless objects and people passing in front of a fire.  The prisoners were scared by the pictures they were told instead of learning the innocent truth that was merely behind them.  The music resembles the tribal ceremony, with a heavy percussive bass imitating drums and sonorous melody, in which one instance of this performance fabrication takes place.

The music was written by Bernie Miller, with lyrics added later by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. It was popularised with a recording by the quartet of the American saxophonist and composer Gerry Mulligan, on the 1952 album of the same name, which also featured Chet Baker on trumpet.
