The lyrics reflect the thoughts of so many of us who wonder what it felt like to those who witnessed the birth and early years of Jesus Christ. The vocal parts are all within normal ranges and of no particular difficulty. The piano accompaniment is of medium difficulty. Meter changes set off the verses from the chorus melody, and there is one key change. This is appropriate for both worship services and any public Christmas program venue. Performance time is five minutes. There are two other arrangements on the website, one for vocal solo medium voice and one for S.A.T.B. The lyricist, Bruce C. In this case it is in the Port Royal Band Books. The Port Royal Band Books are a collection of manuscripts used by the Union band stationed at Port Royal, South Carolina during the Civil War. The original instrumentation is for the brass band of that time. Washington Greys is probably his best known march and the original manuscript for it is in the same collection. This has modern band instrumentation.

It is not well known that he wrote perhaps as many as twenty similar compositions. At the time he was writing he was writing for brass band. Captain Finch's Quickstep was written during or shortly before the American Civil War. I've arranged it for performance by the modern concert band. Listen to the .mp3. This one is particularly challenging and would probably be a Grade 3+ or 4. If Washington Greys is a ten on a scale of one to ten then this would be at least an eight. The song was inspired by a newspaper story about a missing teenage girl. The girl in question turned up safe and sound eventually, and had, by complete coincidence, met the Beatles at a TV recording a few year’s earlier.This version of She’s Leaving Home is arranged as a duet for one Oboe and one Clarinet. However, in the hands of a composer such as Bach, themonothematic material is magnified through repetion which creates a sound universe whichis all it’s own.The work is also shrouded in mystery, as there are no tempo indications in the manuscript,no indications of the instrumentation which Bach intended and no clear indication as to theorder of the movements. An ordering was given to the work after the composer’s death bythe composer’s son, C. P. E. BACH which attempted to underline the pedogogical aspects ofthe composition (as a sort of a textbook for studying fugues and counterpoint). The orderused in this arrangement respects this ordering as it was given by Bach’s heirs. It wouldseem probable however, that this order was not that intended by Bach.The editor hopes that this new version of the Art of the Fugue will be useful in allowingSaxophonists everywhere to perform this great work.
