She told me about her daughter, Rachel, who was born with two extremely rare diseases. The first is  Subcortical Band Heterotopia.  The other is Lennox Gastaut Syndrome.  The latter, likely consequential to the first, is the more lethal of the two, as it causes severe seizures and is not controlled for long by drugs.  The first, the most devastating and life-affecting is characterized by abnormal brain development which causes this delightful young woman of 25 to be locked in the brain of a pre-pubescent child or younger.Dad has left, and his legal obligation to child support ended in 2019.  In NJ, disability, no matter how severe, only extends the legal child support obligation to age 23.  Of course child support payments cannot possibly fulfill or replace the financial, emotional and moral support needed to care for a child without such severe disability.  How much less when the child has such severe disabilities.All proceeds from sales of this song, including licensing and royalties, will be gifted to Rachel's Mom until 31 December 2032 or ten years after Rachel's decease, whichever is later.

Bringing folk melodies into modern repertoire has a long tradition, with many iconic works simultaneously celebrating and preserving melodies which might otherwise have been lost to history. Here we have the opportunity to celebrate and preserve a melody just as it starts to find its way in the musical world. By the time Debbie Friedman died in January 2011, just shy of her 60th birthday, she had created a large collection of music loved throughout the world’s Jewish community. She embodied the idea that each generation has a responsibility to contribute to the canon of sacred music, and her settings of liturgical texts have been sung regularly for decades. Her setting of Mi Shebeirach, the prayer for healing, is likely her most familiar tune, but Shalom Aleichem is a beautiful capstone to her legacy. It was in an early stage at the time of her death, having shared the melody among a few groups. This melody has since been sung worldwide, beginning with Friedman’s own memorial and the following Sabbath of Song (Shabbat Shira), and it has begun to take its rightful place in the liturgical canon. The music here is ordered as it would be sung: starting with a presentation of the chorus theme by clarinets in SATB choir voicing, with more of the band joining-in with each repetition of the theme or chorus. The melody and countermelodies move among the different sections until the full band has taken up the tune while the euphonium, horn, and clarinet weave a contrapuntal line through it. Slowly, the joy of the full band is stripped away, exposing the more solemn sound of a brass choir, juxtaposing the joy brought to so many by Ms. Friedman during her life with a quiet reflection at its end.

The Prince of Denmark’s March is better known nowadays as the Trumpet Voluntary and is often used in wedding ceremonies. It was in fact written for organ, with the melody played on thetrumpet stop.  Written around 1700, for many years this piece was mistakenly attributed to Henry Purcell. Only recently has it been established that the composer was Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. It is somewhat ironic that this composer of a wedding mainstay was himself a victim of unrequited love. He consequently shot himself in the cathedral graveyard. This full version is arranged as a Solo for Violin and Piano; the performance time is around two and a half minutes. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and the repeat may be ignored. The single pdf file contains both the score and the solo instrumental part. The setting for the song in the show is a favorite night spot in which people often have clandestine meetings and the dark interior allows for that, so the song is sung sotto voce for the most part, more whispered, as if everything's a secret. This arrangement maintains that mood with only a few vigorous accents. It is playful and witty and somewhat mischievous. It makes for a good study piece for more advanced intermediate students because of the staccatos all over the keyboard with only isolated pairs of notes played legato for accentuated phrasing. The middle section will help to develop dexterity in rapid finger work. And it's just plain fun to do.
