Mr. Stinkbug is an intermediate-level Halloween piano solo about something I find truly terrifying, a stinkbug landing on somebody's meal. The stinkbug in this piece haunts with a jazzy tune written in the key of E minor. The pieces opens with syncopated and triplet rhythms played with swung eighth notes. The middle section features straight eighth note syncopated rhythms influenced by Latin music. This is followed by a improvisatory section where students improvise a right hand melody using the E blues scale. The stinkbug saga concludes with a snappy ending and a warning to fellow diners, Watch out! He's gonna land on your food..

TAPS - A Remembrance is ideal for the kinds of brief but important Memorial Day and/or Independence Day observances so often called for in our time.
The poignant narration recalls the story of United States Army Sergeant Keith Clark playing the bugle call know today as Taps for the interment of President John F. Kennedy (November of 1963). As author William Manchester later wrote, “The 6th note of the 24 he played seemed like “a catch in your voice or a swiftly stifled sob� that the whole world heard, and that remains part of our national heritage.
The background arrangement (optionally with chorus) heightens the emotion of the story until both give way to a regulation trumpet solo version that includes the grace note error and fades at the end. The orchestration is done in a 4 Part + format that lends itself to optional performance by any section of the orchestra (originally for brass alone).
The choral octavo carries the complete narration (also see below) with accompaniment (playable by/adaptable to organ) and the solo trumpet part (all that’s really needed to perform the piece) along with permission to reproduce the octavo for optional choir/ensemble.
The choral writing involves divisi only at two easily sung cadence points.
And, it can be performed by just the brass and the narrator.

Bugs Bower composed several volumes of Bop Duets.  Like so many other jazz musicians, my roommate and I spent countless hours playing through the volume we had, him on tenor sax and me on trumpet.  Playing them is a masterclass in jazz phrasing, and studying them is a masterclass in the classic principles of counterpoint.  It's a little bit like a Bach fugue.  You start with a short catchy theme, and then let it go where it wants to go, but always building on that theme.  I allowed myself a third voice here, which allow a little more richness.  See also my Sundry Quartet, which adds a fourth instrument to the same basic music.  Level: advanced intermediate.  Duration: 3 minutes, 12 seconds.

Gerda Blok-Wilson’s new composition of Emily Dickinson’s “There Came a Wind Like a Bugle� is a lively setting for SA voices with piano accompaniment. It portrays the arrival of a powerful wind and tells of its effects on the surroundings and impending disaster it brings. The piece has an ominous, almost supernatural sense that is driving to the end.

Although the choral or duet piece would work at any time of year, it could set the tone for a Halloween concert, adding an eerie atmosphere and sense of mystery.

Gerda Blok-Wilson, a Canadian composer, conductor, and educator, is a fervent advocate for the transformative power of choral singing and its remarkable ability to inspire people with diverse abilities. Her motto reflects that belief: If you can talk, you can sing! Since 2018, Gerda has dedicated herself to compiling and editing her compositions for publication. Her portfolio ranges from musicals and choral works tailored to nurture budding choirs to advanced choral repertoire that has garnered acclaim through live performances and recordings. Gerda is artist in residence at St. Patrick’s Regional High School in Vancouver and serves as the artistic director for the Vancouver Cansing Community Choir, which she founded in 2010.
