It’s A Long, Long Way to Tipperary is a British music hall song written by Jack Judge and cocredited to Henry James Harry Williams. It was allegedly written for a 5-shilling bet in Stalybridge on January 30, 1912 and performed the next night at the local music hall. Now commonly called It’s a Long Way to Tipperary, the original printed music calls it It’s a Long, Long Way to Tipperary. It became popular among soldiers in the First World War and is remembered as a song of World War I.

Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit-Bag, and Smile, Smile, Smile is the full name of the World War I marching song, published in 1915 in London. It was written by Welsh songwriters, George Henry Powell under the pseudonym of George Asaf, and set to music by his brother Felix Powell. It was featured in the American show Her Soldier Boy, which opened in December 1916.

This skillful arrangement by Jari Villanueva captures the flavor of the original tunes and would be a great selection commemorating the 100th anniversary of World War I. The arrangement

includes the verses of the tunes and the British bugle call Fall In. This clever arrangement culminates in a rousing section that superimposes both tunes. Included is a Full Score and parts for Brass Ensemble. Also included are substitute parts for Eb Horns and Treble Clef Baritone Horn

A retired member of the United States Air Force Band where he served on the Music Production staff (as well as a trumpeter and bugler) and a student of Bill Holcombe, Jari Villanueva continues writing for different ensembles. His arrangements are played by bands, brass ensembles and brass quintets all over the country including many military groups. Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair is one of the most enduring, and popular American songs of all times.
Characterized as a parlor song, it was written by Stephen Foster, and published by Firth, Pond & Co. of NewYork, in
1854.
In 1850, Foster married Jane Denny McDowell, whose nickname was Jennie. However, this was an unhappy
marriage, short-lived, with numerous conflicts and separations. Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair, was written as
perhaps an attempt to win his wife back. To add to his problems, Foster also ran into deep financial difficulties.
Jeanie With the Light Brown Hair was virtually unknown during its time. When it was first published, the royalties
on the ten thousand copies sold, earned just $200 for Stephen Foster. To make ends meet, he had to sell the rights to
Jeanie, as well as other songs. After his death, the rights to Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair reverted back to his
wife and daughter.
It would indeed be a pleasant surprise to Stephen Foster, if he only knew what a wide range of artists have adapted
this song to different genres. Among solo instrumentalists, Jascha Heifitz, and William Primrose have arranged it
for solo violin and viola. The big bands of Gene Krupa, and Glen Miller have recorded it. The great R & B artist,
Sam Cooke used it, as well as opera stars, Marilyn Horne and John McCormick, who added it to their concert
repertoire.
The song's frequent airplay in the 1940's, led Spike Jones to create a parody, called, I Dream of Jeanie with the
Light Blue Jeans. Les Brown in 1941, created a big band song, Joltin' Joe DiMaggio with the line.....We Dream of
Joey With the Light Brown Bat. Even Bugs Bunny got into the act. The 1960 short, From Hare To Heir, features
Bugs singing, I dream of Jeanie, she's a light brown hare
My arrangement, for woodwind quintet is written to capture a lyric, singing style, which I think Foster had in mind.

This is a patriotic Russian (Czarist) piece written in 1915. It describes the Imperial Russian naval vessel Slava (Glory) on patrol. While supposedly written for military wind orchestra, no known copy for band exists. The only copy is a version arranged for piano four-hands by Konstantin Chernov in the Russian State Library. Slava is a programmatic work that starts with a patriotic hymn, a bugle call to duty, on patrol, a bugle call to quarters, dangerous seas, a bugle call to secure from quarters, and a triumphant return to Mother Russia. This arrangement was made at the request of Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, CA. It was premiered on May 16, 2014, at Wilson Jr. H.S. by the Imperial High School Tiger Band, Brooke Kofford directing. The work is moderately difficult, mainly because of the use of double flats.

Back in 2019, my student Giovanni was having trouble with 6/8 meter. At the time I was using the rhythm solfège of Ba for dotted quarter notes in 6/8. So one lesson, while frustrated with rhythms he exclaimed Ba Humbug! and I couldn't stop laughing! It inspired me to write this cello trio for him and his cello friends to play, honoring that frustration and giving another opportunity to practice 6/8!

All 3 cello parts are at an intermediate level, making it a great early ensemble piece for student cellists.

The parts were designed with neurodiverse learners in mind with well spaced notes and no unnecessary markings added. The cello parts and score are included as PDFs that are easily read on a tablet or printed on US letter or A4 paper without any need for reformatting.

As cute as a bugs ear, this ultra-happy Christmas ditty by Sia is a true joy. Every theme seems unusually familiar, and they are presented by the lead one at a time, excepting the colour theme which is taken by the basses. The four themes are then masterfully woven together in counterpoint in the last stretch of the arrangement. The tenors have the final post whilst the leads finish their theme and the baritones noodle around them, concluding with a very jazzy, very christmassy baritone solo to polish the arrangement off. This is the perfect ear-worm for your Christmas season!
