Oboe Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1018963

Composed by Benjamin Harry Sajo. 20th Century,Contemporary. Individual part. 2 pages. Benjamin Sajo #6086597. Published by Benjamin Sajo (A0.1018963).

Programme Notes:

Fanfare: Grit evokes the brassy and rousing tropes of adventure movie soundtracks and Saturday morning cartoons, such as those written by John Williams, Shirley Walker, among others. Writing this piece was an escapade to my own musical roots for this was the first type of music I had been exposed to as a child: incidental music accompanying perilous quests, hairbreadth escapes, and other trials blocking the hero’s path to victory and redemption. I wanted to compose a piece that harkens back to the music that I first fell in love with, that opened up the gates of a legacy--symphonic classical music--that’s always been my solace in trying times.

What is grit? Grit is the dirt between smiles and between barefoot toes. Grit is a hard-boiled detective. Grit is tilling the tough soil for the possibility of a beautiful blossoming of flowers.   Grit is saying, See you soon, and making sure it happens. Grit is helping others when it’s hard to help yourself. Grit isn’t easy bravery, but the kind of courage you need to build up brick by brick. The obligatory synonyms: courage, bravery, pluck, mettle, and spirit.

Finally, this composition, the fourth of my so-called Beethoven Episodes, was written to accompany Ludwig van Beethoven’s 4th Symphony. This work was written on his 250th anniversary, coincidentally during the Covid-19 Pandemic of 2020, and is the sum of my feelings wrought from that experience. Yet this work was completed on Canadian Thanksgiving, and is also an expression of all that I am grateful for, from the bottom of my heart.

Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by Peter Le Tissier. Chamber,Classical,Instructional. Score and Parts. 52 pages. Peter Le Tissier #714134. Published by Peter Le Tissier (A0.1111957).

Before tackling the final Piano Sonata I thought I'd take a little break from the 'serious' orchestrations and present this interpretation of Beethoven's charming set of Bagatelles, op. 126. Postdating (as far as I'm aware) the 9th Symphony, and certainly all the major piano works, these Bagatelles stand apart from the earlier sets, elevated beyond their status in spite of Beethoven's own 'kleinigkeiten' demonym for them. In particular, the final movement is in this version an extraordinary expansion on the previous 5, quoting as it does the infinity of the finale of the Op. 111 Piano sonata.

Composed by Alan Edgar. 20th Century,Christian,Concert,Graduation. Score and parts. 11 pages. Alan Edgar Ted Moon #3053517. Published by Alan Edgar Ted Moon (A0.903743).

Flexible quintet, parts for oboe, 1st and 2nd trumpet, trombone and timpani supplied.  Solo oboe set against the rest in antiphony. A fanfare for a graduation ceremony is unusual in celebrating the whole assembled company: students, their supporting families, distinguished guests and the staff.  Wishing to make the piece relevant to York St John's University, I considered its religious foundation and dedication to St John, the apostle.  I was delighted to find reference to a Missa Brevis by Robert Hugill, which has never been performed and may never have been published:  this includes an Agnus Dei.  The composer very generously sent me a copy, and I have inserted a well-disguised quotation from it.  Agnus Dei, Lamb of God, is taken from the Gospel of St John, Chapter 1 Verse 29.  My central section is a slow peacock processional pavane, as I anticipate the parade of begowned personages. I wanted to avoid unnecessary dissonance and confusion to be created by York Minster's echo.  I hoped the echo would  enrich the texture rather than muddy it, therefore, I used a scale without semitones--the whole-tone scale, and the lack of rapid passage-work will also help in this acoustic.  I love the antiphonal works of, for instance, Giovanni Gabrieli, which were intended for cathedrals, and Decani-Cantoris antiphony appears in, for example, Orlando Gibbons' O Clap Your Hands, which can be found in the 17th century Bing-Gostling part-books at York Minster.

The Graduation Fanfare lasts about 1 minute 50 seconds.

Other editions are available:

Here are some program notes:

Johann Franck (1618-1677) was born in Guben, Germany, the son of a lawyer.
Like his father, Johann studied law at the University of Konigsburg, where–in
addition to his studies–he developed a warm friendship with a group of hymnists
and poets. Returning home, he began his law practice and eventually became
mayor of Guben. As an avocation, the Lutheran politician wrote poems–and soon
became known as one of the leading hymnists of his time, ranked only behind
Gerhard. He is credited for the creation of a group of so-called Jesus hymns,
building the foundation for the pietistic hymn movement that would later sweep
through Europe. Franck once wrote that poetry should be the nurse of piety, the
herald of immortality, the promoter of cheerfulness, the conqueror of sadness,
and a foretaste of heavenly glory. Indeed, his hymns echoed his own spirit of
encouragement.

Lyndell Leatherman (b. 1953) was born into a Nazarene parsonage in southeast Kansas. After studying church music and composition at Olivet Nazarene University (Kankakee, Illinois) and Illinois State University (Bloomington-Normal, Illinois), he launched into a life of music ministry. Since 1977 he has enjoyed a diverse career as church musician, editor, accompanist, composer, and arranger. In 1998 he became aware of Franck’s eucharistic / Advent hymn, translated either Deck Thyself with Joy and Gladness (Mattes) or Deck Thyself, My Soul, with Gladness (Winkworth). Because the text was unique in its unusually exultant treatment of the sacrament of holy communion, Lyndell felt that the hymn was worthy of renewed consideration in the third millennium of Christian worship. So he updated the language and gave it the new musical setting used here.

SKU: A0.1018955

Composed by Benjamin Sajo. 20th Century,Contemporary. 2 pages. Benjamin Sajo #6078701. Published by Benjamin Sajo (A0.1018955).

Programme Notes:

This composition was written to be considered for pairing alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony #3, the Eroica, but can stand on its own virtues as an intense and slow meditation on heroism. The music is like a boiling pot on the stove that’s just began to overflow its bubbles.

The first part of the title, kommos, is a Classical Greek term from Attic dramaturgy, literally meaning striking but specifically referring to beating oneself up during lamentation--ripping at the hair, gouging out the eyes--like Oedipus--slapping the forehead, and other acts amid moments of extreme emotional turmoil. For example, from Aeschylus's play Agamemnon, a character bewails: Apollo, Apollo! God of the Ways, my destroyer! For you have destroyed me-and utterly [...]What is this fresh woe [...]what monstrous, monstrous horror, beyond love's enduring, beyond all remedy? And help stands far away! We can easily imagine physical accompaniment to the script; rather than bottling up the pain, the hero lets it all explosively come out.

The second part of the title, When the world moved on, is an epigraph taken from American author Stephen King’s The Dark Tower epic. The primary setting of the novel, a world similar in many ways to our own, is experiencing a dark age where the glorious past is all but a distant memory and all good things are referred to wistfully as occurring, When the world moved on. Yet, the main protagonist, Roland, the last gunslinger, emphasizes that it is not just a figure of speech, but the literal distances between destinations have increased, the positions of the stars have changed, as well as the occurrence of other unnatural phenomena. The world has become a gulf of isolation from all corners.

Taken together, this piece is a lamentation for when the world moved on. Truly completed on Yom Kippur during the Covid-19 Pandemic, being unable to fast or go to synagogue, this is my atonement.

About the Composer:

The opening of this 4-minute piece is dance-like, intimating a celebratory mood up front—alone at first, but shared with the ensemble throughout the piece. After much celebration, the piece ends solemnly, as if giving each other final hugs and good-byes. Every Airman has a story to tell. “Farewell Celebration†is part of my story as an Airman musician. It is a fitting farewell to the Heartland of America Band stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, Nebraska, and to the entire American Midwest, as my family and I finalized our plans to uproot for an extraordinary three-year adventure in Asia. Work on this composition began toward the end of July and beginning of August 2021 as a melody with instructions to be the opening of a brass quintet piece, beginning with trumpet alone. It remained in that state until January 2022 when I entered this sketch into the computer to be worked on sporadically along with several other works in progress. When I contracted Covid-19 in July 2022, all of these works and other incipient pieces received attention, but this one more than most others. In the fall, I felt an urgency to complete it as a sentimental gesture of enthusiastic good-byes due to many life changes taking place. In particular, my fourth son, Paul, was departing for two years for Brazil. I was compelled to complete this work before he left on October 17, 2022, which I accomplished the day prior to his departure. In addition to Paul’s farewell, two co-workers with whom I had worked closely in the Air Force brass quintet called “Offutt Brass,†were also moving on with new exciting chapters in their lives. MSgt Ben Kadow, our fantastic trombonist, had received an assignment to move to Germany, leaving us on November 8. And MSgt Ryan Heseltine, our unparalleled French horn player, retired at the end of the year. On top of all that, in September I was given an assignment to move to Japan the following summer. Some farewells are more difficult to endure than others, though all seem to have varied brands of profound emotion. In contrast to saying good-bye to a loved one who passes away, all of these farewells were joyful, albeit poignant. “Farewell Celebration†is dedicated to my son Paul, to my outstanding professional colleagues, Ben Kadow and Ryan Heseltine, and to all our friends and family members who we left behind as we moved to Japan.

ATON is a stage play written by Manfred Strolz and Otmar Rützler which represents Egypt in the time of the Pharoahs but seen through the eyes of modern theatre directors and actors. The modern scenes are spoken but the Egyptian scenes require music, so Manfred and Otmar asked me to write the music for these. The music is composed for various forces as the play progresses, from the full orchestra (woodwind, strings, harp, piano, timpani) and choir down to more intimate moments with single voice or duets, flute and classical guitar or with single voice and bassoon. For each section the pdf file contains score and parts and the sound sample is an electronic preview. As I write, 23 sections have been composed, but more are to come - please just search for Aton in due course for the full picture. The first performance is planned to take place in the Landestheater in Innsbruck during 2015.

Composed by Sally Whitwell. Classical,Contemporary. Octavo. 15 pages. Sally Whitwell #757469. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.1157142).

Written in the Stars -- text and music by Sally Whitwell Written in the Stars was originally conceived in the aftermath of the 2019-2020 bushfire season, the most destructive Australia has yet seen. At the time, we thought things couldn’t get worse, but then followed more extreme weather events, insect and rodent plagues, and a deadly pandemic that brought the world to its knees. All these things are connected, the result of humanity’s exploitative relationship with the planet and its other inhabitants. But we continue to deny the problems and to fail to act. As a species, in our more optimistic moments, we talk about having great opportunities to reinvent, that to live the status quo means that we will be faced with an untenable future. Talking about it is one thing but as far as I see it, we are not taking any opportunities to act. It is clear that we do not learn from our mistakes. As Spanish American writer George Santayana once said “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.†It is from this notion that this song was born. Written in the Stars is about society’s propensity to go through cycles of behaviour, never learning from the mistakes of the past. Written in the Stars was originally commissioned by Adelaide Chamber Singers, directed by Carl Crossin. Sally Whitwell January 2023.

Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Simon James. Advent,Baroque,Christmas,Classical,Contemporary. 19 pages. DML #906815. Published by DML (A0.1318113).

Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring is the popular English title of the chorale from the 1723 Advent cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben (Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life), BWV 147. This arrangement for guitar quartet follows Bach’s original orchestration as far as possible so the choral sections co-exist with the string parts and basso continuo. It does involve a certain amount of reduction in the original voicings but has retained the cross rhythms in the choral section and bass. It makes this arrangement quite complex to perform but very definitely worth it. The 2nd guitar and 1st guitar do cross over each other but that is in Bach’s original writing and I have not changed it.
