This short prelude was written as a processional to precede a festive arrangement of the ancient cherubic hymn, Let all mortal flesh keep silence, which received its first performance at Berlin Cathedral on November 29th 2017. This was commissioned to mark the 25th anniversary of John F Kennedy School’s annual Advent services, in collaboration with the American Church in Berlin.The prelude incorporates themes from various Advent hymns, as well as elements of the fanfare theme from the main choral piece. As well as providing an introduction to a performance of the Cherubic Hymn setting (which can be ordered separately), the prelude may also be performed as a stand-alone piece.As in the first performance, I have left the registrations to be added by the organist.

Wesley Suite The world is my parish, a set of four contrasting pieces for organ, is a tribute to John and Charles Wesley, 18th century clergymen and co-founders of the Methodist Church. The title Wondering Soul is a reference to the first line of the Wesleys’ Conversion Hymn, Where shall my wondering soul begin? which was written after John Wesley’s Aldersgate Street experience in which he felt his heart was strangely warmed. Wesley’s Gallop paints a musical picture of John Wesley riding on horseback around the towns and villages of England, preaching the Gospel in churches, halls, fields, cottages and chapels. Chapel Prayer is a reflective piece referring to Wesley’s Chapel in City Road, London, a Methodist Church built under the direction of John Wesley. The word Liberty in the title of Liberty Fanfare refers to John Wesley’s advocacy for the abolition of slavery. He wrote, Liberty is the right of every human creature. The piece contains musical references to two well-known hymns – (i)  Amazing Grace, the words of which were written by his fellow abolitionist, friend and mentor, John Newton, as well as (ii) And can it be, the words of which were written by Charles Wesley.

The Muskrat Waltz is inspired by the muskrats that were dancing in my pond behind my home yesterday.  This piece is written for late beginner/early elementary students.  It is a great introduction to waltz time, teaching students to really feel the waltz beat.  With the melody in the bass, it is a wonderful piece to showcase the left hand.  The melody is catchy, with an unexpected E flat near the end to catch the audience's ear.  Students will love this piece, recreating the dance of the muskrats.  This piece was written in C position, but uses a B flat and an E flat to enhance the melody in a couple of spots.  The font is larger for easy reading, with some colour added.  Fingering has not been added to this piece as I felt this would also be a great piece for the student to work with the teacher to figure out fingering, using their knowledge of fingering they have learned so far.

They were walking slow, walking fast, talking slow, talking fast or not at all. And as I sat there drinking in this extraordinary spectacle, Sevcik's finger exercises were going round and round in my head. (3rd position plus harmonics).
