By Roy LaVern. By Jacob Sumpter. A Cappella,Broadway,Contemporary,Folk,Musical/Show,Spiritual. Score and parts. 10 pages. Roy LaVern #145501. Published by Roy LaVern (A0.535366).

Text from poem Alumnus Football by Grantland Rice You'll find the road is long and rough, with soft spots far apart, Where only those can make the grade who have the Uphill Heart. And when they stop you with a thud or halt you with a crack, Let Courage call the signals as you keep on coming back. Keep coming back, and though the world may romp across your spine, Let every game's end find you still upon the battling line; For when the One Great Scorer comes to mark against your name, He writes - not that you won or lost - but how you played the Game. I own the rights to the music / score, not the lyrics.

Composed by Connie Boss. Celtic,Christmas,Irish,Sacred. 16 pages. Connie Boss #6428145. Published by Connie Boss (A0.801709).

This is a Christmas original I was inspired to write. The shepherds couldn't quite figure out why there was such a bright star and why the baby was so special. Once they arrived in Bethlehem, they realized he was born to bring Peace on earth to all. Note: This shows going from verse 2 to bridge. You could repeat the refrain in between and/or add the refrain at the end of the piece. It has 6 strings parts as violin 1 has a solo part. The rest play throughout the piece. So many moving parts. The refrain part is played throughout the verses while the solo plays the lead.  cdboss@cvalley.net

Lyrics:

Peace on Earth

Christmas Song

Composed by Connie Boss

Intro and Refrain:

Peace   on Earth

Peace   on Earth

Peace   on Earth

Peace   one Earth

Verse 1:

And into the still of the night

There was one star shining bright

Shepherds in their fields all around

Saw it shine down on a town

Refrain:

Verse 2:

It’s light beckoning all to come

To see the new chosen one

So they followed the bright star

They came from near and from far

Refrain:

Bridge

For some the journey took them days

Arriving there they were amazed

All of this for a baby boy:

Why were they all filled with joy?

Christ was born on Christmas morn, to bring

Peace on Earth

Peace for all

Peace for you and me.

Refrain to end.

This is an original song I composed about the Wisemen coming from the East searching for the infant King. When they saw the star, they knew they had to follow it. It is a great song for Epiphany. It contains 3 verses and a bridge. If you think it's too long, you could cut out the bridge or can cut out some of the verses. This is for Strings quintet and piano. Parts are included with purchase.

This can be played without the piano accompaniment if desired.

This could be played while a choir sings - you can purchase SATB on here as well

Lyrics below:
They Saw a Star

Verse 1:

Three wisemen came from the east

A desert camel, their traveling beast

They traveled far, they traveled wide

Searching for the infant child.

Then they looked toward the sky…..

Refrain:

They saw a star, They saw a star, They saw a star

Lighting up in the darkest night

They saw a star, They saw a star, They saw a star

Oh …..what a wondrous sight

Verse 2:

They followed where the light shown down

And came upon a tiny town

Then they scarce believed their eyes

Where it stopped a big surprise

Then they looked toward the light……

Refrain:

Verse 3:

A crowd of people gathered round

Including shepherds kneeling down

Their flocks of sheep by their side

Then the noise would subside

They made it to the light…….

Bridge:

They saw the tiniest of Kings

Lying in a manger

His mother was close by His side

Keeping him from danger

He was the son of God

The greatest King of Kings

The wisemen brought from their lands

The greatest gifts they could bring.

Latin.

For me, as someone who considers myself far removed from Christian spirituality and closer to the concept of Immanence than to any form of Transcendence, it was obvious to me that I would not compose a Miserere comparable to Alesandro Scarlatti’s Lamentazioni. It was also my wish to theatricalise the subject matter, following pagan rituals which appear to have been retained in the monastic Tenebrae services up to Renaissance times. In the series of sequences in which silence plays a prominent role, a path leads to strange rites in which the listeners are invited to stamp their feet on the ground, creating waves of thundering sound, or accompany the chanting of texts. Three sopranos take on an instrumental role, deploying a broad range of vocal sounds from aspirations to screams. Thierry Pécou.

SKU: A0.767322

Composed by Mike Lyons. Concert,Contemporary,Standards. Score and parts. 35 pages. Lyons Music Services #3488955. Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767322).

Original horn quartet inspired by a conversation about writing for horns. There are three movements.

The first movement is called Canon. It consists of a simple theme that is presented in imitation by each of the four 'voices' first at 2 bar intervals then, in inversion at four bar intervals and then in the original form at one bar intervals. There is a linking fanfare-like passage before the final statement of the original motif with fanfare-like adaptations.

The second movement is called Lullaby. The elegant, drifting melody is passed around the four players with a largely chordal accompaniment pattern that needs to be played sotto voce at all times. The tempo is marked Largo, but it is still one-in-a-bar.

The third movement is called Hullabaloo-haloo-haloo. While it is based on a 6/8 cantering rhythm, there is a lot of variation in both the accompaniment and the melody. Again, all the lines have a lot of interest, nobody has to play simple um-chucks, and there's even a solo for the 4th horn at the end.

I have rearranged the parts as 1/3/2/4 on the advice of a horn player friend of mine. Enjoy.

This is a really enjoyable and exciting new addition to the horn quartet repertoire.

CONCERTINO, for Clarinet, Mandolin, and Orchestra

CONCERTINO was officially commissioned in 2011 by the Geneva Chamber Orchestra. The composition explores the sound combination of two, seemingly opposing, instruments and sound characters: the clarinet and the mandolin. Thus, the three-movement work is a short double-concerto for clarinet and mandolin, accompanied by a chamber orchestra. The first movement, titled Psalm 148 and is a mixture of a coronation fanfare and a wild improvisatory-like dance. The music is based on the structure and ideas expressed in the 148th Psalm. For the transformation of this Psalmodic text into music I was concerned with two elements: first, the linguistic pulse of the ancient Biblical Hebrew gives the music its ever-changing meters and vibrant rhythms. The second element was the poetic concept presented in the text: Heaven vs. Earth, Universe vs. Planet, or Heights vs. Depths. The contrasting nature of these elements is described in the following verses:

Hallelujah, Praise ye the LORD from the heavens; praise Him in the heights. (Psalm 148, verse 1)

Praise the LORD from the earth, ye sea-monsters, and all deeps. (Psalm 148, verse 7)

Finally, both Heaven and Earth join in praise together: Let them praise the name of the LORD, for His name alone is exalted; His glory is above the earth and heaven. (Psalm 148, verse 13)

The musical expression of these contraries is reflected and the use of high-range and soprano instruments (flutes, clarinet, trumpets, violins) versus low-range instruments (trombone, bassoons, cellos and basses.)

The second movement, Romacero Viejo (and old love song) is a slow, lyrical dirge-like melody in a Sephardic Judeo-spanish style. In this movement the mandolin plays in the manner of an Oud – a traditional pear-shaped Arabic lute. The harmony sits mostly on a single pedal note while the clarinet imitates the chant with rhythmically free ornatmental patterns.

The third and final movement, Allegro con brio, is a festive klezmer dance with a traditional Bulgar (or Freylech) rhythm, where the regular 8/8 meter is constantly divided into the irregular count of: 3+3+2. In the middle of this movement the two soloists play a cadenza, which allows them to present their contrasting yet complementary instrumental characters. The movement is titled The Geneva Bulgar in honor of the City of Geneva and the wonderful memories I have been carrying with me ever since my time there as a young student at the Conservatoire de Musique.

Total duration: ca. 23 min.

TRUMPETS:  ANY USE?  Part 2 Soprano orTenor,Trumpet,Organ. Trumpets--Any Use? was inspired by Graeme Lawson’s book Sound Tracks which describes many archaeological discoveries of trumpets and by Kim Moore's poem, When to Play the Trumpet (she wrote several poems about trumpets). There are two sets of four songs: this is the second set.

WELCOME This fanfare and processional sets lines from Tennyson's Welcome to Princess Alexandra (she married Edward, Prince of Wales, and became Queen). I use the wholetone mode.

CALL TO ARMS Uses lines from Tennyson's Call to Arms and the US Army's bugle call To Arms. EvenTutankhamun had military trumpets( see graphic).

REMEMBRANCE uses lyrics by Sue Spivey of Hessle (copyright) and the Last Post.

REVELATION Deities often use trumpets. This chant in organum quotes lines from the Holy Bible's Revelation, 1 and 8, about the seven angels and the awful power of their trumpets, as revealed to John of Patmos.

Composed by Victor Rebullida. 21st Century,Comedy,Holiday,March. 27 pages. Victor Rebullida #919390. Published by Victor Rebullida (A0.1333010).

With this composition I wanted to pay tribute to an artist who was famous in his time and fell into oblivion until recent times when his figure has been recovered by various research works.
May this work serve as a vindication of the great Marceline.
The piece has an optimistic character and in its nearly five minutes of duration I make nods to circus music and the atmosphere of the shows in which Marceline participated.

Marceline is the stage name of Marcelino Orbés. He was a Spanish clown, mime, acrobat, comic actor and circus artist, with American nationality since 1922, who is considered the best clown in the world of his time.

Marceline was Spanish artist born in 1873 who performed in several European countries. Around 1895 he had success at the London Hippodrome and then enticed by producers Thompson and Dundy to come to the New York Hippodrome, where he arrived with great fanfare in 1905. He was a part of shows at the Hippodrome through 1915, by which time his pantomime routine and falling gags were falling out of favor with the public. He did reappear at the Hippodrome for some later shows in 1920-21 and 1922-23.Attempts to succeed in the restaurant business in New York and Connecticut both failed, and he lost money in real estate ventures. Out of work and out of savings, Marceline was found dead by suicide in his hotel room on November 5, 1927, with photographs of his glory days on the bed.

Marceline was long admired by Charlie Chaplin, who worked with Marceline at the London Hippodrome from December 1900 to April 1901, and is one of just a few performers from this period of his life that Chaplin discusses in his autobiography. Chaplin recounts seeing him years later in the United States with a circus, and though expecting to see him be a featured star, was surprised to see him only amongst other clowns.
