This intermediate level piece for piano (2 min, 45 sec) is the third meditation in a volume of twelve. Its recurring melodic and rhythmic motif unifies the composition through contrasting moments of light and darkness. Throughout the harmonic progression, there is an emphasis on the subdominant--always a relaxation of tonality. And it is this plagal sound that is heard last, suggesting a resting place, a moment's peace on an unfinished journey.The performer should be aware of the left-hand's missing eighth-note rest on the down-beat of nearly every measure. It was omitted to avoid a graphic collision. Therefore, the higher octaves are all played on the ands of each beat. Also, notice that in measures 13-14 and other similar places the right-hand plays higher voiced notes in the bass clef. Be careful not to over-emphasize the left-hand ostinato figure, especially the notes played with the thumb. I was thinking about all the ways in which we could not breathe in 2020 - George Floyd's last words, the COVID-19 pandemic putting us all on masks and respirators, the wildfires filling our homes with smoke, the racism that has silenced so many for so long. I thought it would be interesting to write a piece with all that in mind for flute, an instrument which is, of course, all about breathing.  The piece is one movement with four sections: George Floyd, Protests, Respirators, and Wildfires. It runs approximately 9 to 10 minutes, at the performer’s discretion. It requires some improvisation, a few special effects (multiphonics, use of voice, jet whistle), some serious breath control, and a lot of energy. The performer is asked to breathe in specific ways, to make the audience aware of the breathing, and to become uncomfortably short of breath.  There is also optional use of electronic Loop for layering voices in the final section.This piece was premiered by Anthony Trionfo at the National Flute Association convention, Aug. 4, 2023.  Check out the Youtube link for an exciting performance.This is an intensely emotional piece and unlike my other compositions. It was commissioned after the death of a recent graduate, Tanner Born, a euphonium player who participated in the band for all four years of high school. Tanner's parents funded the commission in his memory and asked that I not just make it a memorial piece, but a celebration of his life. Tanner was an avid bowler (illustrated in the rhythmic and celebratory middle section), golfer, and band member.In the Silence is by turns beautiful and contemplative, as well as dark and dramatic, framing an enjoyable and rhythmic affirmation of life. The piece was premiered on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 by the Holcomb High School band, Jim Krohn conducting, with Travis Keller as the euphonium soloist. I had the distinct honor of sitting in Tanner's chair and playing euphonium with the band at the premiere.It was just around a year earlier that Tanner had started attending the church in Garden City where I was choir director in 2009. I was introduced to him and remember a kind face. It was a surreal experience when I was reminded of that introduction after the premiere.You never know where life will take you and how our lives can be intertwined with the lives of others without even being aware of it. It was a wonderful reminder to me that with just a simple twist of fate, the smallest of moments can lead to some of the most powerful moments in our lives.
