White won the Paris Conservatory’s Premier Prix in 1856 and received high accolades from such musical giants as Auber, Berlioz, Gounod, Rossini, and Saint-Saëns, as well as German violin virtuosi Ferdinand David and Joseph Joachim. He was a major force in the cultural life of Paris as well as Europe for the next twenty years, performing on his Stradivarius violin nicknamed The Swansong.
