This little fugue is one of Bach's most famous and beloved organ works.  Re-imagined for double reed choir, it is a challenging and fun setting for this fugue.  The different instruments take turns entering with the subject of the fugue, and interplay back and forth with the other instruments.  The timbres of the different instruments adds a whole new textural dimension to this already fascinating work by J.S. Bach.  I considered the need to breathe for each of these wind instruments, which obviously wasn't an issue for the original version intended for organ.  This piece would be appropriate for advanced high school students, college students, or professionals.  It would do well in a chamber music concert, in a church, or between acts of a larger ensemble concert, perhaps in another location of the auditorium while a (quiet!) set change is taking place.  It would also work well as prelude or lobby music.  The duration is just over three minutes (or longer if you prefer to take it slower).  Each measure is numbered individually for convenience during rehearsals.  I hope you will enjoy performing this piece as much as I have enjoyed arranging it!  There are also versions of this piece available for wind and brass quintets.  Please check out my other arrangements at: http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/publishers/stephanie-daige/6875

Evanescent – (adj.) a fleeting moment of beauty, like a whisper of mist at dawn or a firefly's brief glow, here for an instant before fading away.Evanescent is heavily influenced by  Chinese musical idioms to honour the memory of the composer's deceased grandmothers. The piece begins with bated breath, transitioning to a wistful theme on the bass flute. Out of the grief, a bright melody emerges, recalling the innocence of childhood. The return of the first theme overlaps with the second, turning the carefree tune into a bittersweet recollection. The introduction returns like a sigh, and the time I had with my grandmothers vanishes into silence. This piece is suitable for an intermediate flute ensemble or choir.

The version of Beethoven's 'Drei Equale' for male choir was added to the original's first and the last movement by Ignaz Seyfried, a friend of Beethoven. The second movement was performed on a later moment, but the link between the instrumental version (with text by Frans Grillparzer) was not made. I have taken the freedom to put these two together in this score, and transposed it one major second down to make it fit smoothly in between the other two movements. The first and last movement also contained a text in Latin, but since the second movement was only available in German, I also used the German texts for the other movements.

Commissioned by Allen Buskirk for the Mount Calvary Choir, Baltimore, MD. “Diffusa est gratia / Senex puerum portabat� combines two liturgical texts associated with the feast of Candlemas. The first, “Diffusa est gratia is from Psalm 44:3 and ascribes to Mary a fullness of grace that is a common theme in Marian feasts. The second, Senex puerum portabat,� is more particularly relevant to the story of the infant Jesus and the ancient holy man Simeon found in today’s gospel. Singing two texts within one piece was common in Medieval music, where the interest lay on the juxtaposition of the texts and the interplay between them. Erik’s setting is influenced by both late Medieval and Renaissance choral styles. Each singer has long flowing lines that combine in duets, trios, and full quartet, yielding a variety of textures. Dissonant intervals are treated freely as was common in the late Medieval period before the tight control of the high Renaissance style. This expanded palette allows for more modern harmony that shifts in and out and resolves into consonant intervals at the end of phrases. Rhythmic syncopation and complexity were highly valued in the late Medieval style as they are again today; here they provide forward momentum. Together, these elements define a sensibility that is both ancient and new, influenced by practices of composers from the 14th and 15th centuries as well as more modern composers such as Moondog and Meredith Monk.

It is a short but powerful setting of a sacred poem of three verses by Ernst von Marinelli. Jeff Reynolds has arranged this gorgeous work for 4-part Trombone Ensemble (Trombone Quartet) with an optional contrabass trombone part (it adds a lot of depth) playable on bass trombone. This work in appropriate for intermediate performers (1st part is in tenor clef).

The three dances are Morris Dance, Shepherd's Dance, and Torch Dance. It is arranged for a full clarinet choir (Eb Soprano, Bb soprano 1-3, alto with an alternate 4th Bb part, bass, and Bb contrabass with an alternate Eb contralto part).

Published by JB Linear (A0.582065). Minuet and Trio from Mozart's Symphony No. 39, K543 set for clarinet choir by John Gibson. Mozart's Symphony #39 features the clarinets in many ways, so to set the Minuet movement (3rd movement) for clarinet choir works very well. This arrangement takes a different approach by scoring for 2 solo clarinets playing the music mostly as found in the original orchestration, with the remaining clarinet parts filling in the remaining wind and string parts as needed. I suggest having one person on each of the solo 1st and solo 2nd parts, with at least 3 on a part for the two section Bb clarinet parts. There is also an alto clarinet part with an alternate Bb part if needed. To keep the music light, there is no Eb soprano part or contra bass part.
