The long, lyrical melody borne forward by the steady, quiet, powerful accompaniment conveys a tranquil sacredness. The sense of entreaty and desire for benediction expressed in the Agnus Dei seems a natural fit with Handel’s famous melody. A Violin Solo introduction leads to the voice calling out agnus dei, qui tollis peccata mundi. An instrumental meditation follows leading back to the conclusion of the piece. (Tenor, lead, baritone, bass are roughly equivalent to SSAA, although lead and baritone have similar ranges, but perform different functions). That's when the music takes me is taken from Neil Sedaka's Solitaire LP. The song was notable as it was one of the only songs for which Sedaka wrote the lyrics in addition to the music. He often finishes his song using the song. (The ending of the arrangement is inspired by how he performs the song live, rather than the recording edit). It reached #18 on the UK singles chart, #27 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and #7 on the US Billboard Easy Listening chart. This arrangement was written for a barbershop chorus, and as such the lowest voice part has a lower range than is custom for choral SSAA writing. The melody sits with the lead for the vast majority of the song, but with the bass part taking a few of the lowest notes. Please note: in keeping with normal barbershop practice the men's barbershop voicing names are used (tenor, lead, baritone and bass) and an octave-shifted bass clef is used for the baritone and bass parts. Vocal ranges are: Tenor: D4 - G5 (D above middle C to G above high C) Lead: B3 - D5 (B below middle C to D above high C) Baritone: G3 - C5 (G below middle C to D above high C) Bass: D3 - D4 (D below middle C to D above middle C).

Having completed and published here a 3-part setting of Arabia's Magi sought Him and Ubi est, I came back to the computer a few months later to be reminded that I had started the project with a 4-part (SATB) setting of Ubi est?  I therefore reverse-engineered an SATB setting of Arabia's Magi to complete this short Epiphany set using my original English words for the first anthem and the Latin words of Matthew's Gospel (Ch.2, v2) for the second. Lasting around a couple of minute or so altogether, and with nothing to trap the unwary singer, these are ideal either in a Lessons and Carols service (which extends the narrative to include the Magi), as dedicated Epiphany diptych, or for use in a concert.  N.B. pages 2 & 3 are sample pages only - to save paper, please print just pages (1? &) 4-7.

The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at the King's College Chapel Cambridge has begun its Christmas Eve service of this carol, since 1919, as the Processional hymn. According to tradition, the soloist of this carol is chosen on the day of the performance. It was the first recoding that the King's College Choir made for EMI in 1948.
