After each tour of duty, every soldier has a range of emotions and thoughts racing through his or her head as the make the trip home. A Soldier’s Memory explores a few of those emotions including feelings of heroism, memories of being reunited and PTSD flashbacks. I wanted to share my love and support of our nation’s military by telling a more realistic story rather than an idealized victorious celebration. Coming from a family of many veterans, I am honored to write a piece remembering our nation’s veterans’ stories.

Review of Seasons Suite by Kathy Parsons (mainlypiano.com):

The Seasons Suite begins  with Colors Change, obviously about the transition of summer into fall, but also about the concept of change as we grow. Reflective and subdued, the interplay between Stevens’ piano and  Iimori’s oboe is effortless and flowing. Autumn Wind picks up the pace a bit, but continues the easy flow, bringing images of  leaves swirling. Signs of Winter is a bit darker and more mysterious. Iimori is a big fan of Paul McCandless, and that musician’s influence is very strongly heard in these first three pieces - a very good thing! In Clouds,  Iimori switches from oboe to English horn. This duet with the piano is a dramatic musical depiction of the gathering clouds and anticipation of a coming thunder storm. I really like it a lot!  Snow is tranquility set to music. Sparrow’s Song brings us to the beginnings of spring - the freshness in the air, and the joyful songs of birds in the yard. July reflects the laziness of a hot summer day. Season’s Reprise brings together the  themes from the various seasons, creating a lovely closing to the Suite.

O Sing to the Lord (Psalm 98) with Children's Choir/Descant part is a lovely and powerful expression of God's power and triumph.

This piece is an arrangement of Dan's piece, Choral - O Sing to the Lord (Psalm 98).
He reworked the SATB parts and added a Children's Choir part (or Treble Descant part.)

Time: approximately 3:40
The piece utilizes alternating counter melodies in the verses and a strong homophonic declaration of joy and victory in the refrain.  There is a children's choir/descant part that adds a wonderful series of counter melodies through out the piece.

The bridge of the piece employs a simple and beautiful fugue set with the text from verse 9: ...for he is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with justice, and the nations with fairness.

For 2-part women/men choir with piano accompaniment and optional children's melody.

The presence of children in a choir presentation can be quite charming and encouraging for the congregation.  

These kind of experiences for children can prepare them for a love of choral and exposure to singing with the big choir.  

Plus, as Psalm 8:2 informs us, children can have a ministry that silences the negative influence of the enemy and bring strength and encouragement to all who hear them sing praise!

The children's part in this piece of music is a simple counter melody, no parts.  You do not need an established children's choir, only a few good singers will do nicely.

This is a wonderful expression of praise based on an amazing story in the Bible.

In II Chronicles 20, word comes to King Jehoshaphat that three nations are coming to attack Jerusalem and the people of Judah.  After prayer, the Lord reveals to them what to do:  Don’t be afraid and don’t panic because of this huge army! For the battle is not yours, but God’s...You will not fight in this battle. Take your positions, stand, and watch the Lord deliver you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Don’t be afraid and don’t panic! Tomorrow march out toward them; the Lord is with you!

The people marched out the next day with choir of ministers leading the way ahead of the warriors.  This is the song they sang, Give thanks to the Lord, for his loyal love endures.

God caused the enemy to attack each other in confusion and they destroyed each other.  The Israelites just picked up the plunder!

The Scriptures tell us in II Chronicles 20,
22 When they began to shout and praise, the Lord suddenly attacked the Ammonites, Moabites, and men from Mount Seir who were invading Judah, and they were defeated.
 23 The Ammonites and Moabites attacked the men from Mount Seir and annihilated them. When they had finished off the men of Seir, they attacked and destroyed one another.
24 When the men of Judah arrived at the observation post overlooking the desert and looked at the huge army, they saw dead bodies on the ground; there were no survivors!
25 Jehoshaphat and his men went to gather the plunder; they found a huge amount of supplies, clothing, and valuable items. They carried away everything they could. There was so much plunder, it took them three days to haul it off.

Penn’s Landing was written for the 2020 Curtis Young Artist Summer Program's Composer-Performer Collective. The inspiration for this piece comes from a very specific memory that I had in May 2019 of me and a friend visiting an empty Penn’s Landing at night. The skyline of Philadelphia was so vibrant as well as the lights coming from different booths and restaurants that were open. Experiencing Penn’s Landing without any people allowed us to witness the beautiful qualities that night brings in Philadelphia.

The beginning of this piece starts with a reflective and peaceful feeling. The piano plays a descending two-note figure that resonates on the second note. It then mirrors itself with similar figures that represent the city lights reflecting on the water. The music transforms into something more lively, playful while still using motifs and figures from the beginning. We then move to darker, slightly slower music when the low register of the piano is introduced. The left-hand plays a dark chorale while the right-hand hits high endless, resonant notes. These feelings of elation, admiration, peacefulness, coldness, melancholia were all emotions that I hoped to evoke.

For instance, the opening words are derived from James 1:17 and melodically reflect the Father’s light coming down from above. The harmony of the second phrase turns constraining when quoting 2 Corinthians 5:14 concerning the love of Christ, and, in the third phrase, the voices’ movements quicken at mention of the Spirit's moving. The doxological statement God receive the glory appears three times to honor the Trinity, and, finally, the lyrics ’til He calls you home signal the return of the home key to conclude the benediction. One of the most recognizable Doo-Wop songs from the mid-50s, your audience will be singing along as you end your set or gig with this old classic.  As soon as people hear the signature bass line played on the bari that starts the song, they'll start tapping their toes and coming over to hear the group perform.  This arrangement includes an alternate soprano part for the lead, and an alternate bass sax part for the bari to be able to fit almost any sax quartet configuration.  Enjoy!
