The cycle Children's Corner by Debussy created between 1906-08 is one of the standard works used in piano lessons, containing the following pieces: Doctor Gradus ad Parnassum, Jimbo’s Lullaby, Serenade for the Doll, The snow is dancing, The little Shepherd and Golliwogg's cake walk. The pieces can be classified as easy although they require a subtle touch, fine phrasing and pedalling as well as mature tonal interpretation. The cakewalk was a dance or a strut, and the dancer with the most elaborate steps won a cake (took the cake). The piece is a ragtime with its syncopations and banjo-like effects. The dynamic range is quite large and very effective. A very playful and fun piece that is not too technically challenging. Debussy's original six movement suite was written and first performed in 1908 on the Piano.It was dedicated to Debussy's daughter, Claude- Emma who was only three at the time. The four movements for brass are: 1. Jimbo's Lullaby (about an elephant) 2. Serenade for the Doll (about an Oriental porcelain doll) 3. The Little Shepherd (a shepherd with his flute) 4. Golliwogg's Cakewalk (they were stuffed black dolls with red pants & wild hair. This 11 minute suite is suitable for advanced performers and is the only arrangement published of this work for brass.

This is an arrangement for euphonium tuba quartet of Golliwogg's Cakewalk from Children's Corner, a piano cycle said to have been composed by Claude Debussy for his beloved daughter, Claude Emma. This extremely rhythmical piece is based on the Cakewalk, a two-beat dance music that is said to be one of the origins of jazz, but Debussy is said to have hated this music. The piece also includes a passage from Wagner's Tristan and Isolde, which he also disliked, and is ironic in its own way. It is best to play it humorously, without the heaviness that comes with playing it in the bass clef.
