Arranged by Rob Bushnell. 20th Century,Contemporary,Folk,Multicultural,Romantic Period,World. Brass Band. 71 pages. RBMusic #4580667. Published by RBMusic (A0.752355). Béla Viktor János Bartók is considered to be one of Hungary’s greatest composers (along with Franz Liszt), and is regarded as one of the most important writers of the 20th century. His music tends to reflect two trends that helped to change the sound of music in the 20th century: the breakdown of diatonic harmony; and a renewed interest in using nationalism as a source for musical inspiration. For this latter trend, Bartók turned to Hungarian folk music and become a key figure in influencing the modern use of indigenous music and techniques.  In 1904, whilst at a resort in Hungary, Bartók overheard his nanny, Lidi Dósa, singing Transylvanian folk songs, which sparked a lifelong devotion to folk music. Further influenced by Strauss, Bartók started to write music based on folk songs, including his Romanian Folk Dances (Op. 8a, Sz. 43, BB 56) for piano in 1910, made up of two folk songs. The first of these dances was later orchestrated by the composer for orchestra and named Romanian Dance (Sz. 47, BB 61) and it is this piece that is available here.  This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band. A recording of the original orchestral piece can be found on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuQSdNjFdrY. Other searchable terms: Bela Bartok, Román Tánc, Roman Tanc, Magyar peasant melodies

This is the most elaborate, so far, number in the Klezmer Dances for String Orchestra by the author.Just like # 2, this one is a Bulgar, a typical dance from Romania and the Ukraine. This composition is in the Mixolydian Mode in E, most of the time. There are passages in Ionian E (E major) and in other keys. This should be a lot of fun for the players and for audiences everywhere. All of these Klezmer Dances should be played in strict tempo, and veryrhythmically in order to get the ideal effect.

Piano Solo - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.917502 Composed by D. E. Mathers. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score. 3 pages. D. Eugene Mathers #4887061. Published by D. Eugene Mathers (A0.917502). This movement is the fourth of five dance portraits (collectively titled Musique SABA) commemorating the Southern Academy of Ballet Arts (S.A.B.A.) and its performing company, Pas de Vie, of Tallahassee, Florida. The piece originates from 2003 when composed for the dancer Seah Hagan's first piano lesson, devoted to just two notes, at age four. Fittingly enough, the left-hand part embeds musical ciphers suggested by the syllables of her name, as Se-ah using forms of the pitches C and A, including in a simple way playable by the novice. Meanwhile, the right-hand part, as if for the teacher, quotes Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers--a borrowing itself punning since drawn from Casse-noisette (1892). The new, playful waltz lasts about forty seconds.

Concert Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1343777 Composed by Alexander Borodin. Arranged by John Ivor Holland. 19th Century,Broadway,Classical,Contest,Festival,Multicultural,Musical/Show,World. 264 pages. John Ivor Holland #929284. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1343777). The Polovtsian Dances form an exotic scene at the end of act 2 of Alexander Borodin's opera 'Prince Igor'. The work remained unfinished when the composer died in 1887, although he had worked on it for more than a decade. A performing version was prepared by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Glazunov in 1890. Several other versions, or completions, of the opera have been made. The dances are sometimes performed with chorus and last around 11 minutes. Themes from the Polovtsian Dances have been used widely in popular culture, notably the 1953 musical 'Kismet'; the most prominent example is the popular standard Stranger in Paradise, adapted from the Gliding Dance of the Maidens, which opens this piece. This great piece, a staple of the orchestral repertoire, would form a substantial showpiece in any concert and important solos have been cross-cued for smaller ensembles.
