Back then music was not written according to our modern conventions, which means there is no time signature; the music just flows phrase by phrase. This is why the bar lines are dotted – they don’t signify the end of a metrical measure, rather the end of a phrase. Take your time in between phrases, use those fermatas to your advantage! The right hand plays a straightforward melody while the left hand plays a parallel line. McCartney composed the entire melody in a dream one night in his room, and upon waking, he hurried to a piano and played the tune to avoid forgetting it. McCartney's initial concern was that he had subconsciously plagiarised someone else's work. As he put it, For about a month I went round to people in the music business and asked them whether they had ever heard it before. Eventually it became like handing something in to the police. I thought if no one claimed it after a few weeks then I could have it. I have arranged the melody here as a solo trombone feature which has been successfully performed in concert many times.
