Reflective and subdued, the interplay between Stevens’ piano and  Iimori’s oboe is effortless and flowing. Autumn Wind picks up the pace a bit, but continues the easy flow, bringing images of  leaves swirling. Signs of Winter is a bit darker and more mysterious. Iimori is a big fan of Paul McCandless, and that musician’s influence is very strongly heard in these first three pieces - a very good thing! In Clouds,  Iimori switches from oboe to English horn. This duet with the piano is a dramatic musical depiction of the gathering clouds and anticipation of a coming thunder storm. I really like it a lot!  Snow is tranquility set to music. Sparrow’s Song brings us to the beginnings of spring - the freshness in the air, and the joyful songs of birds in the yard. July reflects the laziness of a hot summer day. Season’s Reprise brings together the  themes from the various seasons, creating a lovely closing to the Suite.

Brass Quintet Euphonium,Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1382118 Composed by John Philip Sousa. Arranged by Matthew Nunes. Chamber,Folk,Historic,March,Patriotic. 26 pages. Matthew Nunes Music #966645. Published by Matthew Nunes Music (A0.1382118). A medley march, using sea chanteys Knock a Man Down, Away for Rio, Haul the Bowline, The Ballad of Billy Taylor, It’s Time for Us to Leave Her, Put up Clearing Gear, Hoodah Day, and A-Roving. Easily one of Sousa’s most enjoyable.  This Brass Quintet arrangement was made using “The President’s Own†United States Marine Band’s The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa score as found at https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/. The Chantyman’s March was composed in 1918, and the referenced edition was made Public Domain in 2019. The piece is catalogued as Volume 5, No. 83.Section titles (such as “First Strain†and “Trioâ€) follow the measure numbers provided by that edition. Each instrument follows its full-band part as often as possible, the only exception being Trombone covering the Euphonium/Baritone part. Because of this, Euphonium/Baritone would make a suitable substitute.

Woodwind Ensemble - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.956663 Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. Arranged by Catriona Melville-Mason. Romantic Period. 91 pages. C Melville-Mason #6735339. Published by C Melville-Mason (A0.956663). This is an arrangement of Mendelssohn’s overture The Hebrides (Fingal’s Cave), intended for a medium-sized saxophone orchestra.  It has been categorised as ‘advanced’, as the length and tempo of the work make it quite challenging.  However, provided the main parts are covered by competent players, those with less experience can either double, judiciously omitting any problem sections, or in some cases opt for the appropriate ‘easier’ add-on part. Essential Parts: Part 1: Sopranino Saxophone Part 2: Soprano Saxophone Part 3: Alto Saxophone Part 4: Alto Saxophone Part 5: Alto Saxophone Part 6: Tenor Saxophone Part 7: Tenor Saxophone Part 8: Baritone Saxophone Part 9: Bass Saxophone   Optional Parts:   Easier Alto Saxophone Easier Tenor Saxophone Contrabass Saxophone   Mendelssohn visited Scotland in 1829 and, after a tour of the Highlands, travelled by steamer from Fort William to Oban and thence to the Hebridean island of Mull.  From there, he made the short boat trip to the small island of Staffa, to visit Fingal’s Cave – a sea cave formed of hexagonal basalt columns, with a highly intriguing natural acoustic. The Hebrides overture was inspired by this segment of Mendelssohn’s Scottish travels.  The work is an early example of a tone poem: a musical representation of the scenery, wind and weather of the Scottish Hebridean islands, reflecting their sudden and infinite changeability. After some revisions, the overture received its first performance in May 1832 and remains a favourite with audiences to this day.  It has been central in establishing – and sustaining – the popularity of Fingal’s Cave as a tourist destination. This is an adaptation of an arrangement that was originally created for a woodwind course held on another Scottish island – Skye, which is the largest and most northerly of the Inner Hebrides.

Published by Kevin G. Pace (A0.1038152). A beautiful, sacred vocal solo with music by Kevin G. Pace and text by Mary Ann W. Snowball. Text: In God’s holy presence I will yet abide. As I show a pure heart, He will be my Guide. Praying daily through his Son whisperings arise, Promising a future day when I will view his eyes. In God’s holy presence, at his throne of grace, I will look upon Him, gazing at his face. Knowing of my weaknesses He’ll help purge my heart. As I trust true covenants, we’ll never be apart. In God’s holy presence I will shed a tear, With his arms around me and his love so near. Giving all my gratitude for his precious plan, I will kneel in thankfulness for Father’s Son of Man. In God’s holy presence He will make me whole. He will claim his offspring as I give my soul. Knowing I am his blessed child grants me greater sight. As I offer all I have, He’ll be my heavn’ly light.
