This is largely because it was used as the theme song of the popular 1950s television series Alfred Hitchkok Presents. Gounod wrote the piece in 1872. The piece, originally for piano, describes the story of a marionette who is killed in a duel. In the original score, Gounod included comments in French matching the action in the story to the music: ·       La Marionnette est cassée!!!
