This playful arrangement of Lullaby of Birdland by George Shearing (concert Ab) for voice and 3 horn ( alto sax, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, and drums ) is unique from many arrangements of this jazz standard by weaving complimentary melodies around the vocal melody, giving this piece a welcome breath of fresh air. The 10-bar intro has a rhythmic push in the piano reminiscent of Jamiroquai’s Virtual Insanity that intensifies the listener’s anticipation to hear the first few notes of this familiar tune in a new and unique context. Returning back to the head via a simple D.S. enables instrumentalists to easily focus on solos rather than the form. The 2-bar rhythm-section outro concludes the piece precisely and cleanly and takes the listener back to the time when jazz bands were first cooking up storms on the dance floors. Though cited with tempo at a quarter note = 160 bpm, this arrangement works well at any bpm between 140 and 170.Other than for the introduction and the ending, the piano part includes chords and rhythmic notation throughout for easy improvisation. The bass part includes both an intermediate-advanced written part and chords throughout, thus accommodating bassists at all skill levels and/or those who would prefer to play a combination of written and improvised bass lines. The drum chart is to be improvised throughout; however, it includes suggested rhythmic ideas and indicates key points in the arrangement such as horn hits, repeats, and fills. Artaria Editions AE436Joseph Martin Kraus was one of the most gifted and unusual composers of the 18th century, whose talent for thematic development, colourful orchestration and theatrical flair caused Haydn to proclaim him one of only two 'geniuses' he knew (Mozart being the other one). Although Kraus's focus as a composer was mainly upon works written for the stage, he had occasion and opportunity to write a variety of works for chamber setting, including this sonata for violin and fortepiano. It is not known for whom this work was written, but the sole surviving source, a set of parts in Uppsala University Library in the hand of Fredrik Silverstolpe, Kraus's first biographer and assiduous collector of his music, dates it to Kraus's grand tour; he notes that it was written in Paris in 1785. This sonata is the most virtuosic and imposing work in this genre that the composer wrote. Of particular interest is the use of a slow introduction with lyrical violin solo, the long Adagio with its alternating solo passages, and the playful final Scherzo which bears a thematic similarity to the now-lost original third movement of Kraus's Violin Concerto (VB 151). Indeed, this complex work merits the rubric Great C major.Allan Badley.

Articulation, tempo and dynamics indications were specified or added where needed, and all the trills were indicated to start with the upper auxiliary note, not only according to the Baroque performance practice but also fitting to the melodic contour. Brother James' Air was composed by James Leith Macbeth Bain (1860-1925), a Scottish-born poet, author, mystic, and healer whose ministry took him to Liverpool and London, where he became known simply as Brother James. The tune is often sung to the metrical paraphrase of Psalm 23, The Lord's My Shepherd, by the Puritan religious author and English politician Francis Rous (c. 1581-1659), published in his The Psalms of David set forth in English meeter (1643). The angular, highly arpeggiated tune in bar form (AAB) is both stark and lovely, rising and falling before ascending to a high tonic cadence in its final phrase. Its harmonic simplicity — consisting primarily of I, IV, and V chords — lends itself to alternate harmonizations with substitute chords.
