The top line as written is intermediate, but there are a few optional “ossia� bars that make the line early intermediate. There’s also an optional bass line for conventional guitar or bass guitar and that’s supplied in treble and bass clefs. The bass line will suit a beginner, but the piece also works fine without it. There is an “improvisation� section in the middle with call and response lines to add interest for players and audience alike.In a large ensemble it works well to have both top parts plus bass and octave bass lines playing - it makes a massive wall of sound!This arrangement was a firm favourite with the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra (HAGO) and their audiences. The Library was featuring piano in their programming that year therefore requesting O’Connor to compose utilizing the instrument. The premier was broadcast on NPR’s Performance Today and was also the centerpiece for a national public radio special America’s Fiddler, Mark O’Connor at the Library Of Congress. Although O’Connor did not utilize the piano as a back-up instrument in his childhood fiddling contests, it does have a tradition accompanying fiddlers in Scotland, Shetland and Canada.
