Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.808698 Composed by Frank Loesser. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Contemporary. Score and parts. 26 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #5290545. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808698).     Brandon Thomas’ three-act farce, Charley’s Aunt, opened in London in 1892 and was a huge success. It has since been performed and adapted many times. One such adaptation was Where’s Charley? a 1948 Broadway version with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser. Ray Bolger played the starring role as Charley, and its most memorable number was the second act’s Once In Love With Amy. Every night Bolger would perform the number, then turn to the audience and invite them to sing along with him. They loved it, and Bolger would continue to perform it as his signature act for years even after the play closed.    The rhythmic and melodic nature of Once In Love With Amy seems to lend itself to performance by a brass group. And that’s what inspired this arrangement. All play the eight-measure introduction, while the verse-I caught you, sir, having a look at her as she went strolling by-features Trumpets, Horn and Trombone playing melody while tuba provides tempo and pulse. Then comes the familiar chorus, Once in love with Amy, always in love with Amy. The first time through, Tuba plays melody with the other instruments providing accompaniment. On the second time through, for the first half, Trombone and Tuba play an intricate counterpoint while Trumpets and Horn do a rather smooth swing version of the melody; for the second half, Trombone and Tuba take the melody and Trumpets provide the counterpoint. Then comes the surprise ending in which all three participate.    Most players will have little trouble. The arrangement consists of 77 measures in 4/4 time. There are several tempo changes; the fastest is quarter note equals 108. Key signature is G, changing to F at measure 44. All notes for should be within normal playing range.    Sweetwater Brass Press also offers a similar version of Once In Love With Amy arranged for tuba trio.     This arrangement was completed in 2020, and performance time runs about 2 minutes, 58 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge; contact him directly at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. String Quartet String Quartet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1151667 Composed by George Frideric Handel. Arranged by Adrian Gagiu. Baroque,Chamber. 37 pages. Adrian Gagiu #751862. Published by Adrian Gagiu (A0.1151667). Handel’s great set of 12 Concerti grossi (= Grand Concertos, in the first edition) op. 6 are somehow a bit related in spirit, through their power and diversity, with Beethoven’s string quartets. Therefore, here they are arranged for the more ‘abstract’ and ‘timeless’ medium of the string quartet, allowing also for an addition to the repertoire of the respective ensembles. Articulation, tempo and dynamics indications were specified or added where needed, and all the trills were indicated to start with the upper auxiliary note, not only according to the Baroque performance practice but also fitting to the melodic contour. Concerto grosso in B flat major, op. 6 no. 7: 1. Largo-Allegro scherzando – a slow introduction and then a formidable, humorous, rhythmic fugato starting with a repeated note; 2. Largo – introspected and complex, reminding of J.S. Bach’s style; 3. Andante – steady and march-like; 4. Hornpipe (Andante) – lively and full of surprises and syncopation. Total duration: 13 min 30 sec. The mp3 audio clip is the second movement (Largo). Performing Rights Organization: SOCAN.

Piano Solo - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.808934 Composed by Aldo Finzi. 20th Century. Score. 16 pages. Preludio s.r.l. #5213937. Published by Preludio s.r.l. (A0.808934). Aldo Finzi's Due valzer lenti for piano that have been performed in a world première by Simonetta Heger in Vico Equense (near Naples) on October 2001 were written, together with the lyric Catharine and another piano piece Tempo di fox-trot, when the composer was hoping to move shortly to the United States. Unfortunately, this never happened although Finzi already had a contract with a music school in Chicago. In both waltzes a short introduction precedes the dance theme and the pleasant piano style, certainly nearer to the Pavana's noble simplicity than to the complex writing of the Toccata, vaguely suggests thoughts of George Gershwin.

B-Flat Clarinet,Piano,Violin - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1208741 Composed by Adam Lenhart. Chamber,Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival. 33 pages. Adam Lenhart #806841. Published by Adam Lenhart (A0.1208741). Introduction to The Rubáiyát of Omar KhayyámThe Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is a Persian poetry collection first put together in 1460 in Shiraz.  It consists of quatrains, four-line poems, with a set of unconventional themes.  The poetry is irreligious and questions the afterlife and God's providence.  It shows keen awareness of the shortness of life and the finality of death. It advises therefore that every fleeting moment of every day should be savored, with wine, lovers and song. The combination of a serious philosophy of life and a carefree attitude has made the poetry popular for centuries.  In 1859, Edward FitzGerald brought out a loose English translation that took the world by storm.  It became the most beloved and widely known poem in the English language for decades until its popularity finally faded in the late twentieth century. Although they were attributed to the great mathematician and astronomer, Omar Khayyam (d. 1131), the poems were by many anonymous hands, and he was just a frame author, akin to Scheherezade in the Arabian Nights.- Dr. Juan Cole, Richard P. Mitchell Collegiate Professor of History at the University of MichiganAbout the CompositionTwo Scenes from The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám explores and embodies two of the main themes that carry throughout the quatrains of the poem collection. In FitzGerald's translation, the quatrains follow a day to night cycle. The two movements reflect this by starting off with an abrupt wake up section and ending the piece with a nocturne.  The first movement, Wine, celebrates the camaraderie, joy and chaos that comes through the physical joy of being with friends. The clarinet, violin and piano interact in a conversational way, talking, laughing, and insulting one another in their own independent lines. The second movement is entitled Intimacy and explores the emotional joy of connecting with one another. The movement is set in a waltz style dance and draws influence from Chopin, Liszt and other romantic era composers. This is juxtaposed by youthful and energetic phrases so that the piece embodies all forms of love: young love, years of marriage and even friendship. Each movement has a sense of urgency and density which is present in the rubá'iyát as well, expressing to the reader that our time on Earth is so short and to make the most of each day.---------------------------Adam Lenhart (b. 2002) is a University of Michigan student of music theory, composition, voice and organ from Ottawa Lake, Michigan. As a theorist, his areas of study vary widely, including 18th century counterpoint, the early American Sacred Harp tradition, and impressionism. As a composer, his music draws inspiration from nature, mathematics and poetry. Full Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1086971 Composed by Claude Debussy/Robert Orledge. Classical,Contemporary,Opera. Score and parts. 32 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #691161. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.1086971). Scored for baritone (or counter-tenor) soloist, mixed chorus and orchestra (2222/2200/timp/2perc/hp/cel/mand/strings). Fêtes galantes was actually planned as a hybrid opera-ballet to a libretto by Debussy’s friend Louis Laloy in November, 1913. For this, Laloy arranged selected poetry by Paul Verlaine into three tableaux, replacing an earlier (unstarted) Debussyan project with Charles Morice of 1912 entitled Crimen amoris. During his last productive summer of 1915, Debussy set a sequence from the start of the first tableau, ‘Les Masques’, involving stanzas 1 and 3 of the opening song for Mezzetin in Verlaine’s comedy Les Uns et les autres (1884). The action is set in a park à la Watteau late one summer afternoon as Mezzetin attempts to entertain a group of nonchalant masqueraders with only the aid of his voice and a mandolin.. This appears to have been prefaced by a slower, elegiac introduction reminiscent of the opening of the comtemporary Cello Sonata and it leads to a danced minuet by the masqued dancers which has clear echoes of the piano piece L’Isle joyeuse (1904). Following Laloy’s scenario, the masqueraders then sing extracts from Verlaine’s ‘A la promenade’ (from Fêtes galantes itself). The minuet returns at greater length before being cut short by a chilly gust of wind, after which the park returns to its orginal state (and music) as though nothing had really happened.

Thirty-five years later, my oldest daughter asked me to reset it for solo piano for her wedding and so here it is! Pianistically considerate, the patterned figures feel good under the fingers. A 4-measure introduction and clearly heard sections can serve as cues for timing the bride and groom’s entrance.Built in repeats are designed to cycle as needed for longer processionals or be cut and still sound musically coherent. Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.881230 Composed by Gary Powell Nash. Contemporary. Score. 31 pages. Gary Powell Nash #36467. Published by Gary Powell Nash (A0.881230). Three Ivory Magnolia Fantasies (2003) for piano solo is a three movement work largely inspired by Dr. Gary Powell Nash’s experiences in Mississippi as Associate Professor of Music at Mississippi Valley State University. Movement one, titled Buddy’s Path is a result of the two main premises of the movement which include blues riffs of Buddy Guy and Beethoven’s Pathetique Sonata. Buddy’s Path begins with a slow introduction and transitions to faster music. After section 2, the slow intro music returns and once again transitions to section 1 material, alluding to the formal structure from Movement 1 of the Pathetique Sonata. Movement two, titled Dedication, a slow movement is also ternary, with A, B, cadenza and A’. It begins with cadenza-like passages, using 32 note rhythms and then moves to slower paced music, with longer note values, although actually marked at a slightly faster tempo. The B section continues the slow paced music and progresses to a Chopin-like cadenza, which closes the B section. The A’ section returns to the slower paced music with longer note values. Movement three, titled Fast Blues on the Wall is based on a blues tune titled On the Wall, an upbeat and fast tempo tune demonstrating the barrelhouse blues tradition. Using a ternary design, the A and A’ sections of Fast Blues on the Wall feature a doubled twelve bar blues-like progression where the corresponding phrases in a standard twelve bar blues progression are doubled in regards to measure length.

Brass Ensemble Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1030615 Composed by William Billings. Arranged by Mike Allsen. Classical,Praise & Worship,Renaissance,Sacred,Spiritual. Score and parts. 41 pages. Aaron Hettinga #636010. Published by Aaron Hettinga (A0.1030615). William Billings (1746-1800) was North America’s first great choral composer. He spent most of his life in Boston, working at various times as a tanner or as minor civic official, and occasionally as a church musician. Billings seems to have had little formal music training, but when he was just 22, he also set himself up as an itinerant singing-master, teaching “singing-schools,†where children and adults could learn the rudiments of musical notation and solfege. To feed the market he and other singing-masters had helped to create, Billings published six collections of music, mostly for SATB voices, The first of these, The New England Psalm-Singer (1770) featured a frontispiece engraved by his friend Paul Revere. Billings was fairly prosperous by 1780s, but his good fortune faded in the 1790s. His final collection of music, The Continental Harmony of 1794, was published for his benefit by a group of Boston friends. Billings died destitute in 1800. Billings composed some 340 pieces, mostly collected in his printed editions. This music has a rough-edged and sturdy beauty that is distinctly different from anything in contemporary Europe. The vast majority of Billings’s works were hymns or “psalm tunes.†He was particularly attracted to the great English hymn-writer Isaac Watts (1674-1748), though Billings himself wrote verses for many of his hymns. One of the most famous Billings “psalm tunes,†Chester is not a Christian hymn, but rather a patriotic song of defiance directed against the British. Billings spent nearly all of the Revolutionary War in Boston and made no secret of his patriot sentiments. Chester was first published in 1770, but when he republished it in his The Singing-Master’s Assistant during the height of the war in 1778, Billings added a verse calling out the “infernal league†of the leading British generals Howe, Burgoyne, Clinton, Prescot and Cornwallis. Many brass-players will know Chester from the finale of William Schuman’s 1957 band piece A New England Triptych. Billings also composed over 50 “fuging-tunesâ€â€”a genre that usually included a short introduction and a repeated contrapuntal section. (These fuging sections usually begin with imitation, but they are otherwise not at all like classical fugues written in Europe at the time.) The fuging-tune Creation is one of his later works, published in The Continental Harmony of 1794, and experiments with the form. It sets two verses of the Watts hymn “When I With Pleasing Wonder Stand†though final line of verse 1 is repeated in a striking phrase that suddenly moves twice as fast (m.15). The fuging section begins in m.30, and rather than the usual exact repeat, Billing writes an entirely new and more elaborate second section beginning at m.44. Billings first published the simple but beautiful Africa in 1770, and published a revised version in 1778; the later version appearing with the Isaac Watts hymn “Now Shall My Inward Joys Arise.†I first arranged Africa in 1995, for the Glenwood Moravian Trombone Choir (Madison, WI), and I edited it for this publication. Phrasing and articulations marked here reflect the original vocal texts. Africa has long been a favorite of the Glenwood group. Chester and Creation were arranged in 2022. Mike Allsen February 2022.
