There’s also an optional bass line for conventional guitar or bass guitar and that’s supplied in treble and bass clefs. The bass line will suit a beginner, but the piece also works fine without it. There is an “improvisation� section in the middle with call and response lines to add interest for players and audience alike.In a large ensemble it works well to have both top parts plus bass and octave bass lines playing - it makes a massive wall of sound!This arrangement was a firm favourite with the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra (HAGO) and their audiences. Published by John Michael Pekowski (A0.1317270). In July of 2015, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft skimmed past Pluto revealing a dynamic landscape. Important new data was collected, helping to piece together the history of a world with a patchwork geology featuring towering mountains, flowing glaciers, and plains of ice. I was inspired by the spirit of exploration. With this is mind, I arranged semi-symmetrical sets with varying densities into pitch topologies constrained by numerical relationships. These are juxtaposed next to each other, helping to suggest the patchwork geology of Pluto. As I was composing, I gave preference to fluidic voice-leading and dramatic exposition. I also had to end with a satisfying resolution because NASA’s mission has been such a success. In fact, New Horizons continues to explore objects in the outer solar system.Conductor's note: The (optional) last twelve bars are bit of an unintentional homage to sci-fi, but have their roots in the triplet pattern established in the introduction. In this piece I was using a narrower set list, and interestingly these types of hommages are more common within the simpler numerical permutations of smaller quantites.

It was originally recorded as a big band/swing tune by Glenn Miller and His Orchestra and featured in the 1941 movie Sun Valley Serenade. It was the first song to receive a gold record, presented by RCA Victor in 1942, for sales of 1.2 million copies.The song opens up with the band, sounding like a train rolling out of the station, complete with the trumpets and trombones imitating a train whistle, before the instrumental portion comes in playing two parts of the main melody. This is followed by the vocal introduction of four lines before the main part of the song is heard.The main song opens with a dialog between a passenger and a shoeshine boy:Pardon me, boy, is that the Chattanooga Choo Choo?Yes, yes, Track 29!Boy, you can give me a shine.Can you afford to board the Chattanooga Choo Choo?I've got my fare, and just a trifle to spare.The singer describes the train's route, originating from Pennsylvania Station in New York and running through Baltimore to North Carolina before reaching Chattanooga. He mentions a woman he knew from an earlier time in his life, who will be waiting for him at the station and with whom he plans to settle down for good. After the entire song is sung, the band plays two parts of the main melody as an instrumental, with the instruments imitating the WHOO WHOO of the train as the song ends.Here's my representation thereof with Sam Harrill's nifty percussion score supporting it.

An ideal work for Christmas concert programming.This is a through-composed instrumental arrangement that explores the melody and harmonies of the Holst hymn in 3 differently arranged verses. After a short introduction the first verse uses Holst’s original 4-part harmonisation in its beautiful simplicity, with the first violin playing the melodic line. In verse 2, the viola presents the tune in a lower register while the 'cello plays a Baroque style ‘walking bass’. The violins weave countermelodies above them, introducing new material for a Pachelbel-like interlude of an ascending sequence - bringing the music to a climax before subsiding into verse 3. Here a slightly ornamented version of the tune returns with the new material continuing in the bass line. After another smaller climax we return to the original Holst as the work ends quietly and thoughtfully.
