There’s also an optional bass line for conventional guitar or bass guitar and that’s supplied in treble and bass clefs. The bass line will suit a beginner, but the piece also works fine without it. There is an “improvisation� section in the middle with call and response lines to add interest for players and audience alike.In a large ensemble it works well to have both top parts plus bass and octave bass lines playing - it makes a massive wall of sound!This arrangement was a firm favourite with the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra (HAGO) and their audiences. Although O’Connor did not utilize the piano as a back-up instrument in his childhood fiddling contests, it does have a tradition accompanying fiddlers in Scotland, Shetland and Canada. In 1931 he heard the Russian translation of a German song inspired by Carl Boberg's poem O Store Gud (O Great God). Hine translated the song to English and added verses. The central theme appears in the third verse: And when I think that God, His Son not sparing, sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in. Mr. Hine and his family left Ukraine as famine and World War Two began, settling in Somerset, Britain, where he continued to serve in missionary efforts. And, although several competing translations appeared through the years, this version of the lyric was published in 1949 and quickly spread in popularity. String Quartet In the Bleak Mid-Winter is a popular Christmas Carol which has been set to music by both Gustav Holst and Harold Darke. This string quartet arrangement is based on the Holst version and combines the composer's beautifully simple harmony with the arranger's own counter-melodies and intricate part writing. Lovely writing for all instruments. An ideal work for Christmas concert programming.This is a through-composed instrumental arrangement that explores the melody and harmonies of the Holst hymn in 3 differently arranged verses. After a short introduction the first verse uses Holst’s original 4-part harmonisation in its beautiful simplicity, with the first violin playing the melodic line. In verse 2, the viola presents the tune in a lower register while the 'cello plays a Baroque style ‘walking bass’. The violins weave countermelodies above them, introducing new material for a Pachelbel-like interlude of an ascending sequence - bringing the music to a climax before subsiding into verse 3. Here a slightly ornamented version of the tune returns with the new material continuing in the bass line. After another smaller climax we return to the original Holst as the work ends quietly and thoughtfully.
