My Violin Concerto is scored for a Classical-sized orchestra, with the addition of a harp and celeste, and lasts around 17 minutes. Although the work sets out to explore the lyrical characteristics of the solo instrument, it is only gradually that the violin finds its full, lyric voice, and thence, as the work progresses, a more dominant role. This, in one sense, is the ‘journey’ of the piece. The work’s straightforward formal scheme consists of three movements (roughly fast–slow–fast) framed by a reflective introduction and epilogue. However, these formal divisions exist within a single, unbroken arc. Such an overall symmetrical shape places the slow Arioso (itself divided into three subsections) at the midpoint, sandwiched between the two Allegro movements. The dramaturgy of the piece centres on a twofold search. First there is the ongoing pursuit to ‘recapture’ the simple melodic material stated by the solo violin – accompanied by the harp’s bass register – during the opening bars. Whilst aspects of this melody are invoked frequently throughout (especially in the violin cadenza which closes the Arioso movement), it is only with the final and most important climax of the work that the melody appears again in its complete form, now accompanied by violent, orchestral stabs. The second search is for a tonal resting place, the arrival of which is delayed until the close of the epilogue. The original version of the Violin Concerto, commissioned by the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, was premiered in Amsterdam in February 2012 with Gordan Nikolic as soloist. The present, revised version was created for Barnabás Kelemen and the Hallé. The piece is dedicated, with admiration, to my friend Oliver Knussen. (Ryan Wigglesworth).

Although O’Connor did not utilize the piano as a back-up instrument in his childhood fiddling contests, it does have a tradition accompanying fiddlers in Scotland, Shetland and Canada. In 1931 he heard the Russian translation of a German song inspired by Carl Boberg's poem O Store Gud (O Great God). Hine translated the song to English and added verses. The central theme appears in the third verse: And when I think that God, His Son not sparing, sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in. Mr. Hine and his family left Ukraine as famine and World War Two began, settling in Somerset, Britain, where he continued to serve in missionary efforts. And, although several competing translations appeared through the years, this version of the lyric was published in 1949 and quickly spread in popularity. The Holberg Suite, Op. 40, more properly From Holberg's Time (Norwegian: Fra Holbergs tid, German: Aus Holbergs Zeit), subtitled Suite in olden style (Norwegian: Suite i gammel stil, German: Suite im alten Stil), is a suite of five movements based on eighteenth century dance forms, written by Edvard Grieg in 1884 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Danish-Norwegian humanist playwright Ludvig Holberg. It exemplifies nineteenth century music which makes use of musical styles and forms from the preceding century. The movements of the suite are: Praeludium (Allegro vivace) Sarabande (Andante) Gavotte (Allegretto) Air (Andante religioso) Rigaudon (Allegro con brio) The Holberg Suite was originally composed for the piano, but a year later was adapted for string orchestra. The suite consists of an introduction and a set of dances. It is a charming, early essay in neo-classicism, an attempt to echo as much as was known in Grieg's time of the music of Holberg's era. This edition is an arrangement for a traditional Brass Band, and the music works very well for the band.

It has become a jazz standard.It is also known as Interlude. Gillespie called the tune Interlude and said some genius decided to call it 'Night in Tunisia'. He said the tune was composed at the piano at Kelly's Stables in New York. He gave Frank Paparelli co-writer credit in compensation for some unrelated transcription work, but Paparelli had nothing to do with the song. A Night in Tunisia was one of the signature pieces of Gillespie's bebop big band, and he also played it with his small groups. In January 2004, The Recording Academy added the 1946 Victor recording by Gillespie to the Grammy Hall of Fame.On the album A Night at Birdland Vol. 1, Art Blakey introduced his 1954 cover version with this statement: At this time we'd like to play a tune [that] was written by the famous Dizzy Gillespie. I feel rather close to this tune because I was right there when he composed it in Texas on the bottom of a garbage can. The audience laughs, but Blakey responds, Seriously. The liner notes say, The Texas department of sanitation can take a low bow.The complex ostinato bass line in the A section is notable for avoiding the standard walking bass pattern of straight quarter notes, and the use of oscillating half-step-up/half-step-down chord changes (using the Sub V, a tritone substitute chord for the dominant chord) gives the song a unique, mysterious feeling. The B section is notable for having an unresolved minor II-V, since the chord progression of the B section is taken from the B section of the standard Alone Together, causing the V chord to lead back into the Sub V of the A section.Like many of Gillespie's tunes, it features a short written introduction and a brief interlude that occurs between solo sections - in this case, a twelve-bar sequence leading into a four-bar break for the next soloist.

There is an “improvisation� section in the middle with call and response lines to add interest for players and audience alike.In a large ensemble it works well to have both top parts plus bass and octave bass lines playing - it makes a massive wall of sound!This arrangement was a firm favourite with the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra (HAGO) and their audiences.
