This optional descant requires a strong player with nimble fingers and a good sense of rhythm. In a school ensemble, it will be fun for everyone to see the teacher sweat a bit on the fastest sections. Written by Henry Williams Baker (1821-1877) and titled “The Lord Shall Give His People the Blessing of Peace,” the text of “O God of Love, Give Peace Again” was published in the 1861 edition of the landmark English hymnal, Hymns Ancient and Modern. Baker, who is perhaps best remembered for his hymn “The King of Love My Shepherd Is,” was chairman of the committee that prepared that hymnal. Because war is a constant in the world, Baker's text is always relevant. Stanza 1 is an entreaty that God would “make wars throughout the world to cease.” Stanza 2 asks that God recall his “works of old,” for only by God's hand can peace be given again. Stanza 3 extends this thought by asking “Whom shall we trust but thee, O Lord? One of the “Great Four� Anglican hymns of the 19th century, Charles Wesley’s (1707-1788) “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing� first appeared in the 1739 collection, Hymns and Sacred Poems, by Wesley and his brother John (1703-1791) under the title “Hymn for Christmas-Day.�Based on a verse from the Gospel of Luke (“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.� — 2:14), the hymn tells of an angelic host singing praises from Heaven above to Christ — the God incarnate, Savior and Redeemer of the world. George Whitefield, a fellow Anglican cleric and founder with the Wesley brothers of the evangelical movement known as Methodism, adapted the hymn and published it in his 1754 Collection of Hymns for Social Worship. Additional revisions were made by other editors, including the repetition of the opening lines, “Hark! the herald angels sing / glory to the new-born king� at the end of each stanza, as it is commonly sung today.Wesley envisioned his hymn being sung to the same tune as his “Christ the Lord is Risen Today� (published as “Hymn for Easter-Day� in Hymns and Sacred Poems). However, the tune MENDELSSOHN, an adaptation by English musician William H. Dan HeslinkThis medley combines three of the most favored Carols celebrating the miracle of Christ’s birth. Angels We Have Heard On High encapsulates the birth of Jesus Christ as narrated in the Gospel of Luke. The flowing second part of this carol portrays the shepherds’ wonder as they encounter a multitude of angels singing and praising.  The spiritual renewal brought about by the birth of the Christ child is given in What Child Is This? Sung to the tune of the traditional English song Greensleeves, its haunting quality has made it one of the most popular of Christmas carols. And focusing on the immediacy of the Child’s entrance into the world, Away in a Manger has become the most loved of all American Christmas carols.  The medley opens with an eight-measure introduction that immediately establishes the Christmas spirit, and then moves on to Angels We Have Heard on High. The binary form of this section should suggest to the performers two contrasting manners of execution, one involving brisk, rhythmic strokes and the other more legato in nature. At the second indicated rehearsal number What Child Is This? introduces a new key and new meter for new melodic content. The score shapes these phrases with dynamic changes, which should be observed with care. The dynamic arches and divided eighth note passages will enhance the impetus of a rolling ternary meter  The medley’s final selection, Away in a Manger, begins at measure sixty-seven. A light and delicate approach to execution should create an innocent, child-like characterization. The final cadence of this selection is expanded to a bolder conclusion. Players and conductor may wish to experiment with a dead stroke on the last soft note, to artistically suggest that the music may be experienced for a moment even after it is concluded.  This medley will be especially effective programmed on a winter holiday concert.
