Pierre-Claude-François BOUILLON (18??-1883) was the principal conductor of the Cirque Fernando,  the famous circus of the Belle Époque who inspired many impressionist artists, such as Renoir, Degas,  Toulouse-Latrec and Georges Seurrat, whose masterpiece “Le Cirqueâ€� was inspired by this Circus.   Bouillon was a very prolific compposer, writing many works for solo instrument and piano, marches,  galops, waltzs, polkas and other dances. These works were intended to illustrate the various numbers  presented during performances..Papillon is a theme and variations which begins with a lyrical introduction. The main theme (letter C) is in the form of a popular French romance. Its interest lies in the combination and adjustment of the respective fragments, to result in a fluent piece in late Classical style. The sketches were expanded to exploit a bit their passing ideas (the double bars in the score indicate the end of the original material). A mysterious introduction in C minor (Largo, Biam. 349b) is continued by modulations reminding of the Introduzione to the Finale of Beethoven’s Op. 53 and linking it to the vivacious central section, with triplets (first, Allegro assai, in B major as a possible reading of Biam. 280, which was originally written down without a key signature). This is continued by a section in A major (Biam. 349a) and then in D minor, in triple time (Biam. 467). Cantilena, Op. 11b, Cantilena tries to capture a popular flavour, borrowing freely from pop and jazz styles: primary and secondary chords are used in arpeggiated piano figures, as mainstream ballads might do; pedal notes are a feature, especially on the tonic note; and a 'bluesy' style emerges in the third main theme.
