The introduction gives way to mostly-unison woodwind rendition of I Heard the Bells On Christmas Day. The brass then further works out the melody with a more chordal presentation. The woodwinds present a short, light interlude, followed by an explosive snare drum and full-band chord one key higher than the beginning. The piece shifts to a Jingle Bells march. Following the march, the music modulates back down one key and returns to a full band, Maestoso version of I Heard the Bells. The overture comes to a close with a return to the familiar introductory bell tones. This piece is sure to be a festive hit for both your students and their audience!

The model here is the final Presto from Chopin's Sonata in Bb minor. The effect is a kind of rapid Minimalism, but with more rapid contrasts of colour than typical modern Minimalist piano. The duration is a bit over four minutes. It is best NOT to use the pedal at ALL, as the chords change so rapidly that there is no real need: the continuity will be there! Not a fast version of the 2nd slow movement, but a unique set of chords that provide min-min, maj-maj, aug-aug contrasts and combinations. MP3 MIDI audio.
