Cello Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1411445

Composed by Luke Acerra. Classical,Contemporary. Individual part. 20 pages. Songburd Music #993710. Published by Songburd Music (A0.1411445).

Suite No. 1 for solo cello is a composition that pays homage to Bach's solo cello suites while incorporating its own unique musical narrative, reminiscent of a Hero's Journey.  Drawing inspiration from the baroque dance forms, each movement reflects both the essence of its namesake and represents a significant chapter within this musical odyssey. At the heart of the suite lies a symbolic motif introduced in the first measure of the Praeludium, serving as the foundation upon which each subsequent movement is written.

Moreover, the Praeludium introduces a harmonic tension in measure 9 that is left unresolved until the final bars of the Gigue. This deliberate choice creates a sense of conflict within the Hero's Journey.

It is only in the closing bars of the Gigue that this tension finds resolution, symbolizing the Hero's transformative journey throughout the Suite. This musical narrative reflects the theme of personal growth and renewal, akin to the process of self-discovery and transformation found in the Hero's Journey archetype.

Composed by Amos Elkana. 21st Century,Contemporary. Score. 10 pages. Amos Elkana #912460. Published by Amos Elkana (A0.1324262).

In this composition, we delve into the enigmatic world of Ikkyu Sojun, a 15th-century Zen Buddhist monk renowned for his poetry that defies conventional boundaries. Ikkyu's work often reflects Zen principles, blending deep philosophical insights with a stark, often provocative simplicity. Among his most striking poems is Crow with No Mouth, a piece that captures the essence of Zen’s emphasis on the ineffable nature of reality and the limits of language.

Crow With No Mouth

Hearing a crow with no mouth
Cry in the deep
Darkness of the night,
I feel a longing for
My father before he was born.

In these lines, Ikkyu conjures an image that is as perplexing as it is profound. The crow, a traditional symbol of mystery and the unknown, is rendered even more inscrutable by its lack of a mouth - a paradoxical figure that seems to transcend ordinary existence. This poem encapsulates the Zen concept of mu, or the negation of fixed concepts, challenging the listener to embrace the boundless nature of understanding.

In my composition, I have strived to translate this philosophical depth into music. The interplay between the piano and the voice is crafted to reflect the paradoxical imagery of the poem. The music moves through moments of tension and release, mirroring the poem’s journey from perplexity to a serene acceptance of the unknown.

This piece is an invitation to explore the spaces between notes, between words, where the essence of understanding might lie.

The emotional core of this composition is also deeply personal. It resonates with my own longing for my father, who passed away seven years prior to the creation of this work. Just as Ikkyu's poem reflects a yearning for a connection with the past, this music embodies my own journey of grief, memory, and the search for peace in the echoes of loss. The intertwining of my personal narrative with Ikkyu’s profound words aims to offer a universal contemplation on the themes of absence, longing, and the ephemeral nature of existence.

In creating this work, my aim has been to offer not just a musical experience, but a doorway into the profound simplicity of Zen thought. Through the synthesis of voice, piano, and Ikkyu's evocative poetry, we embark on a journey that transcends the mere act of listening, inviting contemplation, and perhaps, a glimpse into the boundless sky of our own perception.

Composed by Jeremy Van Buskirk. Contemporary. Octavo. 22 pages. World Projects Corporation #2989147. Published by World Projects Corporation (A0.1027798).

The text for Closer to Home is taken from a hymn written by Norbert Čapek (1870-1942.) Čapek was born in Bohemia and later became the founder of the Unitarian Church in the Czech Republic. Čapek joined the Unitarian Church while living in the U.S. escaping unwanted government pressure over his political and religious views. He also worked to gain U.S. support for a free state of Czechoslovakia. After World War I, he returned to Prague and it’s at this time he founded his church. During World War II, Čapek was accused of treason and sent to the Dachau concentration camp. He was put to death in 1942.

The lyrics describe a traveler eager to the return home after a long journey. The journey is full of wonder and as it nears its end the anticipation grows. During the last stanza, ÄŒapek reveals the story traces the traveler's journey through life and we
realize how far the they have come.

For TTBB Chorus, Piano and optional Violin (Violin part included with the score)

2022 holds a significant milestone for my family. This year, my grandmother, Bobbie Kay Turner, celebrates her ninetieth birthday. In planning for the celebration, I was stumped about what to give her. I wanted it to be unique, something no one else would think of. Finally, I had the idea to compose a new song. I contacted my friend, James, and he was immediately on board. In fact, he had the first draft of a new poem back to me within the day!

When my grandmother (“Mimi†to her grandkids) was 36 years old, she and my grandfather moved to Cayman Brac, Cayman Islands with their six children to serve as missionaries; and she has been there since. So, when I think of Mimi, I can’t help but think of the many times I’ve sat and watched the ocean with her. Knowing this, James created a text that depicts life as a ship’s journey across the sea. Throughout the song, you will catch snippets of my grandmother’s favorite hymn Amazing Grace which, like Horizon, is a song about a journey.

My grandmother has lived a full, long life and continues to joyfully live each day. James’s beautiful lyrics perfectly capture her journey, particularly the final stanza. Mimi is known for being full of energy and abounding in love for those around her, and she never stops telling anyone who will listen about the divine light of an eternal home.

SKU: A0.535387

Composed by Carson Cooman. Baroque,Contemporary,Sacred. Octavo. 65 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3043973. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.535387).

I. Sinfonia
II. To Mary on the vigil of her Assumption
III. A Votive Song
IV. The Heliotrope-the mind of man turned to God

Ascensions (2009) for SATB chorus, traverso, baroque violin, viola da gamba, and organ was commissioned by and is
dedicated to the Cornell University Chamber Singers, Holland J. Jancaitis, director.
The work is a cantata consisting of an instrumental sinfonia followed by choral settings of three poems by neo-Latin poet
Jakob Balde, S.J. (1604–68), hailed as the Horace of Germany and considered one of the greatest Latin poets of any era.
In the case of the three poems selected, Balde’s vivid imagery and mastery of Latin poetics are put in service of religious
expression. The poems are filled with countless allusions to the classical poetic tradition; notably, he creates a strong
correlation between the Virgin Mary of his Christian tradition (Balde was a Jesuit priest) and the goddesses invoked in
classical Latin poetry. Thus, Balde uses the older forms to express something that was, for him, contemporary and
relevant. (An analogue to this use of language is the idea of creating new music to be played on period instruments.)
The opening sinfonia begins with an ascending pattern of triads, which returns throughout the work. The forward
momentum is interrupted several times before the movement settles tonally. The first choral movement employs a
bouncy momentum to set the celebratory poem on the Virgin’s assumption. The second movement is a prayerful song on
the acceptance of death; it is spare and meditative, unfolding as a series of sectional canons over several drones. The final
movement returns to the celebratory spirit of the opening; this time, instead of the Virgin’s journey, the poem describes
the speaker’s journey and compares a purposeful sea voyage to a directed life.
Balde’s poems are provided in their original Latin and in two translations. One is a free translation in rhyming poetic
English created by James J. Mertz, S.J., longtime professor at Loyola University. The other is a newly-created literal
translation by Edward J. Vodoklys, S.J., Senior Lecturer in Classics at the College of the Holy Cross.
Carson P. Cooman, January 2009, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA
PERFORMANCE NOTES: The composer prefers a classically-informed Italianate pronunciation of the Latin
(church Latin is acceptable). (It is important that V always be pronounced as V, not as the W sound
often used by classical Latinists.)
The work is conceived for a chamber choir, as a larger choir would not balance the timbres of the baroque
instruments. It is suggested that 16–24 singers be employed (no fewer than 12).
As with much early repertoire, dynamic and expressive markings are kept to a minimum. It is expected that
director and performers will inflect lines expressively and naturally. The organ part is notated for a small portatif
organ with pull-down pedal (with no independent pedal stops). If played on a larger instrument, this smaller
registration plan should be kept in mind so as to create balance with the instruments and choir
