The first concerto of its kind, CANE: Bassoon Concerto with Reed Quintet (Oboe, B-Flat Clarinet, Saxophone, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon) by Jenni Brandon tells a dramatic story of one bassoon reed’s journey from its origins as raw, organic cane, to the final joy of playing on the finished reed. The colors of the reed quintet and the virtuosic solo bassoon intermingle in this through-composed piece to take the listener through this vivid experience. Rhythm, lyrical lines, extended techniques, Afro-Cuban style music, jazz and fugue join together to remind us that this is an organic process. From making reeds to making music, we come together to create performance. Ever changing and ever evolving, every reed and every performance is unique, and Cane promises to tell this story in a powerful and exciting new way.  Co-Commissioned by the Akropolis Reed Quintet and Dr. Christin Schillinger.

A finalist in the Salford University International Composers' Competition 2014, 'The Smoke that Thunders' tells the story of David Livingstone's journey to discover Victoria Falls. The piece starts out in optimistic fashion, with a Scottish folk song by Rabbie Burns, which Livingstone reportedly used to hum on his travels. The next section describes his battles with local African tribes, who were suspicious of his motives. After surviving these assaults, a more reflective section ensues, which describes the doubts Livingstone had about continuing his mission. This is epitomized by the hymn 'Lord, Send Me Anywhere', which Livingstone himself wrote. The final section describes his journey along the Zambezi River, the triumphant sounds eliciting his elation at discovering the magnificent Victoria Falls, or as it is known by locals, 'Mosi-oa-Tunya' (The smoke that thunders). *Please note audio file is of the brass band version.

Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809–1892) wrote Crossing the Bar in 1889, only a few years before his death. Although it was not his last poem, he requested that Crossing the Bar appear as the final poem in all collections of his work. This poem describes a person not only at peace, but also perhaps awaiting the time of eternal rest and peace. The journey begins at sunset in a minor mode and finishes in the relative major after having crossed the bar. Both the first C minor chord and the final E-flat major chord have an added F-natural meant to represent the initial call which has guided the protagonist’s journey toward seeing his pilot face to face.

This charming little prelude was not actually the first one I wrote for this collection, but rather a replacement for the original which felt out of place with the rest of the pieces. At first glance, it appears to be a study in thirds for the right hand while the left left hand keeps a steady underlying motion, but it is much more than that. There is a feeling of a journey, as though a leaf is floating down a stream. It starts out simple enough, with an air of peace and the image of sunlight on the water. There are moments when the trees block out the sun and the leaf goes in and out of the shimmering reflections, caught in the pull of the current, but nevertheless carried along without any concern as to where it is heading.
The music takes on a minor feel as the leaf enters the rapids and is tossed about from whirlpool to whirlpool, nearly being submerged but always finding its way to the surface before finally breaking free and continuing it’s journey with the same sense of tranquility with which it began.

This is the final song in Schubert’s Winterreise song cycle, and tells the story of a poet encountering a hurdy-gurdy player busking in the snow. An atmosphere of absolute bleakness and despair should be conjured up by any performance of this song, as the song’s main character completes his lonely ‘winter’s journey’ and deterioration of his mental state. The chromatic grace notes in the introduction are supposed to represent the sound of a hurdy-gurdy being warmed up, and the open A string played thereafter is meant to evoke the hurdy-gurdy’s drone strings; so ensure it is allowed to ring clearly whilst playing the main figure on the higher strings. The guitar part is relatively simple, but it needs to be played with absolute precision and dynamic control; the extensive use of the open position allows the guitar’s natural resonance to come through.  

This classic Schubert song has been arranged for voice and acoustic guitar in order to provide an alternative accompaniment option for singers who want to perform Schubert’s lieder with guitar instead of piano.
