This late intermediate suite of three songs for piano was created out of my fascination with the allegory of the Fool's journey found in different Tarot decks.  In some the Fool has a Flowering Staff, which provides the impetus for the first piece, The Flowering Staff.  In others the Fool has a leaping, laughing dog.  The little dog was my guide for the second piece, The Laughing Dog. And sometimes the Fool is found stepping off the side of a cliff, inspiring the third piece, Beyond the Abyss. The Greek mode Dorian has a lot of historical attributes, connecting with the Doric tribes and even with Helen of Troy. I have always found music in the Dorian mode to be very pleasing, even before I knew what it was; it has uniquely attractive qualities and shows up in diverse music traditions from all around the world. Dorian can also be a name for a person. In this composition, I have imagined Dorian to be the protagonist on a hero’s journey. The music creates a narrative of our main character Dorian growing up, going on a grand adventure, and finally returning home, enriched by so many experiences.

Beginning in A Minor, Journey to Joy opens with a dirge. The double stop melody has A as a pedal tone throughout. The second section is a waltz. The low register of the viola is brought to the forefront. The pulse picks up and uses more of the viola’s upper register. The work accelerates and finishes in C Major with a jig.

A collaboration between composer John Horman and text writer Mary Nelson Keithahn, 'Paul & Co.' tells the story of Paul's visit to Philippi on his second missionary journey. The musical is written for unison chorus, soloists, flute, piano, optional handbells (3 octaves), and optional congregation. It may be performed by children, youth, and/or adults, and lends itself especially well for use with multi-generational groups.
