Published by Artaria Editions (A0.1488288). Artaria Editions AE408Ignaz Pleyel (1757-1831) was at one time the most famous composer in the world. The popularity of his music eclipsed that of even his teacher Haydn and publishers vied to bring out his latest works as soon as they were finished. Some 2000 separate prints of Pleyel works had appeared by 1800 and his fame extended to every corner of Europe and as far afield as North America. Pleyel's career as a composer spanned less than thirty years with the majority of his works composed in the 1780s. He founded a successful publishing house in Paris in the mid-1790s and later began manufacturing keyboard instruments. With increasing demands on his time from his business concerns Pleyel's productivity as a composer dropped sharply and he ceased composing around 1805. Among the authentic chamber works the duos occupy a particularly interesting place. The Six Duos for Violin & Violoncello (Benton 501-506) appeared in over twenty editions in Pleyel's lifetime, the first in 1787, and in a variety of scorings. Although their unusual instrumentation undoubtedly contributed to the popularity of the Duos, their musical qualities - evidenced by the large number of contemporary arrangements - probably played a greater role. The works abound in attractive and distinctive melodic material; Pleyel writes idiomatically for both instruments and his part-writing is varied and interesting.

The Gypsy Baron (German: Der Zigeunerbaron) is an operetta in three acts by Johann Strauss II which premiered at the Theater an der Wien on 24 October 1885. During the composer's lifetime, the operetta enjoyed great success, second only to the popularity of Die Fledermaus (The bat). The Ouverture is a very popular piece, often performed during concerts but it normally requires large orchestral forces: hence the present arrangement, which only requires 1 flute, 1 oboe, 1 clarinet, 1 bassoon, 1 horn, 2 percussion players, and strings.P.S.: if you want to listen to a beautiful performance of this Ouverture check out the Vienna Philharmonic with Carlos Kleiber. It's absolutely brilliant!

This minuet is the third movement from Eine Kleine Nachtmusik – the Serenade No. 13 for Strings in G Major, K.525 – one of Mozart’s best known works.  Scholars suspect that the piece was written under commission, although no records exist of who might have commissioned it, or when it was first performed.  Eine Kleine Nachtmusik was not published during the composer’s lifetime – it was one item in a bundle of works that his widow Constanze sold to a publisher some time after Mozart's death.This minuet from Eine Kleine Nachtmusik makes a charming recital piece or appealing addition to general repertoire.  The semi-flexible instrumentation allows for use with several slightly different player line-ups.

Described on the title page when first published in Paris as “Douze Petits Duos facile d’éxécution, Pour deux Flûtes DÉDIÉS à M. Auguste de la Grange COMPOSÉS Par F. DEVIENNE�. Neither the date of composition nor that of the first publication are known but the latter would have been during Devienne’s lifetime. Each Duet has two movements and the set of twelve is gently progressive for both parts making part swapping between pupils or pupil and teacher an enjoyable option. The only dynamics indicated are in Duo 9 and I have refrained from adding more as the possibilities are numerous and players will enjoy experimenting for themselves. In editing these duets I have corrected obvious copying mistakes without comment. All editings are indicated either in parentheses ( ) or dashed lines. In the first bar/measure of the Grazioso movement of Duo 4 I have shown the way the turns (grupettos) should be played and continued using the grupetto sign. The layout of the duets avoids page turns during movements except for the last movement of no. 12 which is too long. A nifty page turn from flute 2 should solve this small dilemma.

This was the only movement performed publicly during Saint-Saëns's lifetime, as he considered the rest of the suite too frivolous, or too silly, for his career as a serious composer. Understandably so, as it is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written, depicting a swan gracefully paddling across the surface of the water, with a calm, gentle mood. Quite ironically, the piece is in G major, which has gained a completely different meaning in Internet culture. German.With Carl Friedrich Zelter's motet Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, Hermann Max, editor of the Choral Treasury series, has uncovered a real treasure. The three-verse text of the motet for mixed choir (SATB) and basso continuo was written by Friedrich Gottlob Klopstock who kept close to the Advent song of the same name by Philipp Nicolai. During Zelter's lifetime, the motet enjoyed great popularity. And quite rightly so: For the music teacher and friend of Goethe turned out to be a composer with an extraordinary sense of tone. An introductory choral movement is followed by a captivating bass aria which can be optionally sung by all basses of the choir. The piece culminates in an elaborate virtuoso fugue with an interwoven cantus firmus in the bass. A demanding, yet highly rewarding rarity in church music!
