Other Echoes Inhabit the Garden (2009) for clarinet, bass clarinet, pipa, and erhu (score and parts) I composed this piece imagining myself in a garden of images, sonorities, and aromas that all merge in an idyllic moment in time.  I have taken a line from one of T.S.Eliot’s poems in the Four Quartets, for my title, Other Echoes Inhabit the Garden. The poem, Burnt Norton, concludes with the poignant truth that humankind cannot bear very much reality. I often wonder whether my work as a composer really has any significance or meaning beyond helping my listeners temporarily escape their personal realities. In recalling Eliot’s line, What might have been and what has been/ point to one end, which is always present I am reminded that a melody, a single line of lyric pitch flow evokes memory in the mind of the listener and that rhythm and accent often draws our attention to the present moving towards the future. So, with these inherent powersof music in mind, it was my goal to create a piece of vibrant and engaging music that relentlessly draws the listener into the present moment. Eliot also alludes to a timeless merging of present and past in this poem. His line, then a cloud passed and the pool was empty brought back memories of being a child watching clouds almost unnoticeably move across the sky. I was similarly inspired to conclude Other Echoes Inhabit the Garden with music that evokes an ecstatic stillness tempered with a longing for the past. WGN

Elvey is from Bjorck's album/CD This I Know: Ageless Hymns of Faith. Many listeners will recognize this melody as Crown Him With Many Crowns, but this hymn also uses this tune. The lyrics exhort the listener, Give to the winds thy fears. Hope and be undismayed. God hears thy sighs and counts thy tears. God shall lift up thy head. It is often challenging to give our fears to the wind. Thus, in Bjorck's arrangement, a repeating bridge and the coda were created to remind the listener of the wind.

It won an Academy Award for Best Original Song and Bing Crosby's recording topped the Billboard chart in 1942, 1943 and 1944. It returned to the charts several more times, selling more than 50 million physical copies to date. This amount is doubled when cover versions by other artists are included. This arrangement is a Baroque-style instrumentation; two violins, a soloistic obbligato viola da gamba, organ and/or harpsichord (played tasto) and a part for a bass instrument or two, figured for the optional lute or theorbo. This is a new arrangement, rather than a transcription of a known version. It is in the same tonality as Bing Crosby's hit record but has only one framed chorus. The organ/ cembalo part, where treetops glisten in the snow, has a cheeky reference to a concert in which an organist triumphantly flipped the last page of their hardback score with such gusto that it dropped onto the keys in the silence between the end of an oratorio and the start of the applause. The part for viola da gamba might need some preparation by a competent player and would be quite a challenge for a daring cellist. The other parts are on the easy side of intermediate. One of the most famous Brazilian songs and one of the best known compositions by Chiquinha Gonzaga, the modinha Lua branca has a history surrounded by mystery. It was written for the burleta Forrodobó, performed at Teatro São José in June 1912, as a modinha for the characters Sá Zeferina and Escandanhas, whose original verses maintain the caricature spirit of the play. In 1929, this romantic version appeared with the title Lua branca (White Moon), recorded by the singer Gastão Formenti, without the authorship of the verses and the new title being known to this day. Between the two versions, there was an arrangement on disc with the title Lua de fulgores by the singer R. Ricciardi, pseudonym of the paulista Paraguassu, but it was the version recorded by Gastão Formenti, accompanied on the piano by professor J. Otaviano, and the Irmãos Vitale edition with harmonization by the pianist that became famous. Chiquinha Gonzaga had to claim authorship of the modinha, denouncing plagiarism and obtaining victory through Sbat, an entity she founded. The original version was recorded as a comic scene by Pinto Filho and Maria Vidal, in 1930, with the title Sá Zeferina. Also the original melody with verses by Paulo César Pinheiro, entitled Serenata de uma mulher (A Woman's Serenade), was recorded by Olívia Hime in 1998.
