Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811155). Beethoven wrote five military marches for wind band and they are referred to being works without opus numbers or WoO. He was well acquainted with marches and wind instrumentation. His marches fell out of favor after a while as the instruments called for became antiquated (Piccolo and Flute in F, etc.). With today's arrangements for modern instruments these works are now being performed more often. These Two Marches for Military Band arranged by Jim Tempest were written in 1809-1810 for a military review and are a great example of the style of the day: a simple harmonic style, 2 or 4 bar phrases with lots of dotted notes and snappy rhythms. The instrumentation is for a 14-part Brass Ensemble and Percussion: Piccolo Trumpet in B-flat, 3 Trumpets in B-flat, Flugelhorn, 3 Horns, 3 Trombones, 2 Euphoniums, Tuba, Bass Drum, Snare Drum and Cymbals. They are appropriate for moderately advanced performers and are about 3 minutes in length each.

He composed this sonata at about the age of 27, when the music of Turkish military marching bands was very much in fashion. This intermediate piano solo arrangement takes the tempo a bit slower and is based on the sounds of funk music: syncopated rhythms and heavy emphasis on the first downbeat of each measure.  5 pages with a shorter option to end on page 3. First performed in August 1848 in Vienna, it soon became quite popular among regimented marching soldiers. It has been remarked that its tone is more celebratory than martial; Strauss was commissioned to write the piece to commemorate Radetzky's victory at the Battle of Custoza. This fun arrangement by David Fetter has moderate range requirements, all parts are in bass clef and can be performed by moderately advanced performers.

Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.733069). Tchaikovsky referred to the piece as his Serbo-Russian March while writing it. It was premiered in Moscow on November 17  1876, conducted by Nikolai Rubinstein. The march is highly programmatic in its form and organization. The first section describes the oppression of the Serbs by the Turkish. It uses two Serbian folk songs, Sunce jarko, ne sijaÅ¡ jednako (Bright sun, you do not shine equally), by Isidor Ćirić and Rado ide Srbin u vojnike (Gladly does the Serb become a soldier), by Josip Runjanin - giving way to the second section in the relative major key, which describes the Russians rallying to help the Serbs. This is based on a simple melody with the character of a rustic dance which is passed around the orchestra until finally it gives way to a solemn statement of the Russian national anthem God Save the Tsar. The third section of the piece is a repeat of Tchaikovsky's furious orchestral climax, reiterating the Serbian cry for help. The final section describes the Russian volunteers marching to assist the Serbs. It uses a Russian tune, this time in the tonic major key and includes another blazing rendition of God Save the Tsar prophesying the triumph of the Slavonic people over tyranny. The overture finishes with a virtuoso coda for the full orchestra. The piece shares a few refrains with the 1812 Overture, with which it is frequently paired in performance. This is the Tsarist (i.e., non-Soviet) Version.
