In May of 1944, Sherman tanks of the Canadian 3rd Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment (The Governor General's Horse Guards) entered the Liri Valley, southeast of Rome, beginning Operation Diadem—the drive that would eventually break through the heavily fortified German defences of the Gustav and Hitler Lines, and liberate Rome.When the regiment left Italy in early 1945, its mission accomplished, it left behind 61 fallen comrades (out of a total of 71 members of the regiment killed during the War).To them, to Trooper Ed Stafford, the regiment’s last surviving veteran of the Italian campaign, and to all who have served, this concert march is dedicated.Drawing inspiration from classic film soundtracks, the march celebrates the courage, spirit, and heroism of Canada's soldiers and all those who take up arms for their country.

Johann Strauss Sr. wrote this catchy celebratory march in 1848, a month after the Count Josef Radetzky won a now long-forgotten victory in the first Italian war for independence from the Austrian Empire; Radetzky had been a leading light of the Austro-Hungarian army throughout the first half of the 19th century. It was an immediate hit, and it remains so in Austria. These days it's kind of an unofficial national anthem that involves audience participation (clapping and stomping in the appropriate loud passages) and is kind of required content in any concert program, frequently as an encore. In the U.S., it's an Oktoberfest standby. My first exposure to Radetzky came when the Stadtmusik Feldkirch, a community band, was kind enough to allow an American ex-pat to join its ranks for the couple of years we lived there. Feldkirch is a lovely medieval town in far western Austria; it borders directly on Liechtenstein. I played the tenorhorn, which is the alias for a baritone or euphonium over there.

Well, this new and original march by Jaxson Salter is a great way to shorten the program, or add another march! This amazing, intelligent march feels like the opening of a movie, with the dominant 7th interrupting the F major, hinting at the transition to B flat in the Trio. Some minor is used to give the resolution to F feel more comfortable. This is an amazing, exuberant, and lively march, and is nescessary for your band's (or bands') next concert.
