The title was inspired by Cherry Lake, which is a 600 acre lake located in Madison County Florida. It is a beloved lake of Madison County that gives beautiful sights and unique activities for all ages. The name stems from the presence of wild cherry trees near the water's edge, according to Allen Morris' book of place names.It is my hope that Cherry Lake March will provide students with a song that they will enjoy learning to play, and provide other music educators with a teaching tool that can be used to motivate and encourage their students.Cherry Lake March is dedicated to all of my former music students in the Madison County Florida School System, who I had the privilege of teaching from 1974-2016.

It was written for Organ by Charles Gounod (1818 - 1893) and was used for papal processions. The march surprisingly tuneful and more importantly-not terribly diffiicult . It is also very flexible, it can be made longer or shorter  by adding repeats  or stopping earlier -without sounding so. There are two (2) horn in F parts which may be omitted as they are doubled  in various other parts. It is a not too challeging  and tuneful break from the routine/

Many of these ensembles did not have access to traditional percussion instruments. To allow percussionists to have a way of performing despite not having access to their instruments, I decided to write a march using found instruments or instruments you can find in everyday life. For example, the crash cymbals may be played by two metal trash can lids, and the snare drum could be a small plastic garbage can. This march may also be performed with traditional instruments or found percussion based on the director’s preference.

These were the French dukes, clad in gleaming armor, carrying brilliant banners and bejeweled shields, who fought for the Pope far more willingly than they would have for the lives of their own serfs. Hence the martial references in this text, sung to a tune that is perhaps even older than the verses. Georges Bizet, composer of the opera Carmen, used the same tune as a farandole, or stately dance, in his incidental music for Alphonse Daudet’s play L’Arlesienne (The Woman from Aries). The March of the Three Kings has been arranged in the woodwind friendly key of g minor at the Intermediate level.  Performance time: approx.  2 minutes.
