Practice Tips: This notation may look confusing, but it's easy to get used to! Measures 1-14 are made up of a constant eighth-note rhythm that alternates between both hands. Chords in the top staff should be played by the right hand, and chords in the bottom staff should be played by the left hand. The melody alternates between the hands. In measures 1-6, bring out the bottom note of the left hand. In measures 7-15, voice the top note of the right hand. The left hand's line in measures 17 and 21 should be treated as a response to the right hand. Pedal both measures in their entireties; however, be careful not to play the first note in either measure too loud, or else it will not sound nice. Also notice the cross-staff slurs in measures 19 and 20: the shape of the inner melody will be easier to hear if you are able to clearly voice the first A. If your hand is too small to reach the 9th in measure 15, you can substitute an A for the bottom note, or you can take a bit of extra time and play the first G with your left hand.

While every part takes its turn with the melody for at least a short time, this is a good vehicle for showcasing a solid jazzy-ballad lead trombonist. Other accompanying moving lines around the entire ensemble will keep things interesting for everybody. While the lead trombone part spends a little bit of time in the upper register, and there are a few characteristic lower notes for the bass trombonist, there aren’t many other technical challenges making for an accessible chart for a broad range of skill levels. This wonderful Sonatina is in 3 movements for the intermediate flutist.  It is a finalist for the 2022 New Voices for Young Flutists competition.  Set in the band friendly Key of B-flat major, Movement 1 is a Classical Sonata Allegro Form with an accessible flute part and a piano part that makes it BIG!   It's called 'Clockworks' because of the type of clock sounds used, especially in the piano part. The range for the flutist is Low A to High D.    Movement 2 is called 'Time for Caring.'  I wrote the melody I wanted to play.  It's lovely and makes you want to develop an even more beautiful sound.  It's range is Low F to High D with a fast scale going from Low F up to mid B-flat.   This is also in the Key of B-flat.   The 3rd Movement is also in the Key of B-flat.  I called it 'Time to Grow.'  It's rhythm is in 8/8, usually divided into 3+3+2, although there are a few measures where it is easier for the flutist to think of it in 2+2+2+2.   It has a lot of drive in the rhythm and I think has a Broadway kind of sound, as if people were moving and walking across a busy stage while singing.  I'm uploading a recording of this which I hope you enjoy!  The piano part is much more challenging.  Each of these movements is accessible, musical, interesting and when paired with the accompaniment a full ensemble kind of sound.   Enjoy!

Published by DML (A0.1102371). In dulci jubilo (Latin for In sweet rejoicing) is a traditional Christmas Carol which has become a mainstay of the Christmas Nine Lessons and Carols repertoire. Johann Sebastian Bach set this melody several times: as a chorale in BWV 368; and then for organ in BWV 608 as a double canon in his Orgelbüchlein. Clearly he was fond of the tune and who can blame him. This arrangement of BWW 608 follows almost exactly the four original voices from the canon. It is not difficult to play technically but the rhythm is challenging.
